Frank C. Sperry
Frank C. Sperry
Frank C. Sperry passed away peacefully in Meridian, Idaho, on Nov. 17, 2013, with his wife Karen and daughter Stacey by his side. He was 72 years of age. He was born in Salina, Kan., on Dec. 29, 1940. He was a member of Del Norte High School class of 1960. He loved football and being a strong offensive and defensive player, and he continued to be a two-way starter on a Warrior team that brought a football championship to Del Norte. Frank was honored as he was selected to the League Coaches first team All Star roster as well as the All North Coast Section team.

Frank’s love of football took him to Humboldt State University, where he became one of  the 1960s Dream Team. He was inducted into HSU’s 2000 Hall of Fame.

Most of his working life he spent in the woods as a logger, shingle sawyer and managing partner of Welco Wood Products. He founded North Bay Tire in Arcata, Calif., and enjoyed interacting with the many customers. He retired from Crown Simpson Pulp mill in Arcata when it closed. After 22 years of managing his rental properties in Eureka and Fields Landing, Calif., he retired for the last time in 2008 and moved to Star, Idaho.

Frank enjoyed snow skiing even though he was a late “bloomer.” He belonged to two dance clubs and loved to dance the night away.

Frank and Karen traveled to Hawaii many times, his favorite being Maui. Cruises became the fun way to visit several countries, including the Caribbean, Alaska, Panama Canal, Transatlantic Voyage to Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother and two brothers. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen; daughter Shelley Sperry of Rio Dell, Calif.; Stacey Hunt and husband Tom of Eagle, Idaho; grandchildren, Shaun Charlton of North Dakota; Valya Rainwater of Chico, Calif.; Hellen Sperry and Chris Sperry of Rio Dell, Calif.; Savannah Hunt and Taylee Hunt of Eagle, Idaho; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters; sister-in-law Carol Bowman; brother-in-law Bill Bowman of Lovelock, Nev.; nephews Pat Hessig and Kevin Tomlinson.

He will be remembered by his longtime close friend Rudy Wilson of Crescent City, and other numerous friends.

We are deeply grieved by his untimely death. He will always remain very much alive in the memories we all share. Have a safe journey and Bon Voyage, Frank!

At his request, no formal services will be held. Private celebration of Life will be held Thanksgiving at the family home. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity in Frank’s name. Condolences and memories at can be sent to P.O. Box 655 Star, ID 83669.
