Obituary: Guy Preston Ames (Aug. 17, 1946 – Nov. 29, 2013)

Guy Preston Ames passed away at the age of 67 in Crescent City. His mother, father, two sisters and Pastor Marty Tyler were at his bedside in the Addie Meedom care home.

Guy grew up in Crescent City, attending Redwood Elementary and Del Norte High School. His activities included sports and a variety of jobs, including Del Norte Triplicate paper route and the county recreation department.

Guy attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb. After graduating, he taught in Lutheran Middle Schools, first in New York City and later in Lincoln, Neb., for 6 years. He worked for New York Life Insurance Company, also recruiting sales agents.

He earned a MPA degree from the University of Nebraska and pursued jobs as a financial consulting officer for the university, then Peter Kiewit Construction Co. and finally TIAA-CREF, a teacher retirement planner. He returned to Crescent City and retired in 2009. Not one to just sit around, he volunteered working for the Redwood National Park visitor center.

Continuing his sports activities of school, Guy was an avid hunter and fisherman. His many hunting trips for deer, pheasant, ducks and geese were paralleled by fishing trips to Canada for a variety of catches.

In July 2011, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, and his doctors told him that he had upwards of four months to live. By the grace of God, Guy celebrated three birthdays after the diagnosis. In that time, he very efficiently closed all of his business and investment attachments. It should be added that his extreme friendliness, humor, and sincerity was surpassed, only by his generosity.

Guy is survived by his parents, Bob and Mary Jean Ames of Crescent City; brother Brad Ames of Waterbury, Conn.; sisters Carolyn (Mike) Walkner of McKinleyville and Kathryn (Ray)  Sherwin of Crescent City; eight nieces and nephews; seven grandnieces and nephews; three loving aunts and their families, Mary Lee Stutz of Tehachapi, Pat Olson of Crescent City and Janet Ames of Central Point.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. A fellowship luncheon to be served at the church after the memorial services.

Memorial donations may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
