Harold L. Martin
Harold L. Martin
Harold L. Martin was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Orofino, Idaho, to parents Harold E. and Bertha P. Martin. He has gone home to be with the Lord after a long battle with cancer on May 17, 2013, at the V.A. Medical Center Hospice care unit, in Vancouver, Wash.

He joined the Army in 1951 and served in the Korean War. He used his GI bill in 1953 to attend the University of Idaho, graduating with an M.A. Degree in Education and Administration in 1957. Harold married Patricia Robinson in 1954, and they celebrated 58 years together. They moved to California in 1957, to teach at Bar O Boys Ranch for 13 years. Harold later transferred to Crescent Elk Middle School to teach 7th and 8th grade science and math for 20 years. He never met a stranger and made everyone feel special.

Harold enjoyed gold dredging in the Smith River, riding motorcycles, dancing, jazz, summer travels, camping, field trips to Modoc, Calif., with 80 students to reenact the story of the Modoc Indians. He loved teaching, and volunteering for the community, Gasquet Boy Scouts, Gasquet Volunteer Fire Department, Gasquet Bible Church and  Gasquet Raft Races.

Harold was  also active in the Gasquet American Legion Post 548, VFW Post 1381, NRA, and the Korean War Veterans Association. In 2010, all veterans were invited to visit South Korea, by the Korean government, for the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. Harold really enjoyed the trip.

Surviving him are sister Myrna Trail, of Kennewick, Wash.; wife, Patricia Martin; son Steve and wife Damita of Crescent City; daughters Connie Martin, Big Island of Hawaii (Kona), Hawaii; Charlene Martin and husband Bruce Musterman of Reno, Nev.; grandchildren Jennifer and Derrick; great-grandchildren Kaylynn and Nevaeh.

Preceding him in death was sister Janice Larson, Lewiston, Idaho.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 25, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel, 408 G St. Crescent City. Graveside services to follow at the Veteran’s Cemetery with Pastor John Dean officiating. A celebration of life will follow at the VFW Memorial Hall at 810 H St., Crescent City. Everyone is invited to visit with the family and talk story. ALOHA.
