Harold Raymond (PeeWee) Justice
Oct. 16, 1920 – Dec. 31, 2012
Harold Raymond (PeeWee) Justice, born October 16, 1920, to Colbert and Florence (Coleman) Justice, died December 31, 2012, in Crescent City, ending a long, productive life.
Harold was born, and grew up in Riffe, Wash., where his love of fishing and hunting began along the Cowlitz River; pursuits that he followed most of his life.
In 1942 Harold met the prettiest girl he’d ever seen and soon married Peggy Louise Hughes. Harold and Peggy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Sept. 7, 2012. That union not only created much joy but also four children: Nadine Rae Justice (died in infancy), Raymond LeRoy (deceased 2000), Beverly; and Norman.
In 1944 Harold joined the U.S. Navy where he obtained the rating of Carpenter’s Mate 2nd Class serving aboard the U.S.S. Hanson. In 1949 Harold and Peggy moved with their children to Fortuna, Calif., where he worked first as a truck driver and in the logging industry. In 1954 he began work in the petroleum product business, an endeavor that he would pursue the rest of his working life.
In 1965 Harold and Peggy bought a Union Oil Distributorship and moved from Hydesville, Calif., to Crescent City. Working hand in hand with Peggy, he proved that long, hard hours could bring a struggling business to success. It was not uncommon for him to take time in the evening or weekend to answer a customer’s call for help, to either repair a furnace, or fill an empty heating oil tank in the home of one of his elderly customers, or a home with a cold newborn. He did these things countless times. These things he did quietly and without fanfare. Many times a gift from Harold was anonymous. In 1977, his son Raymond became a partner in the business, with Harold retiring in 1985.
Harold and Peggy loved traveling and crossed the United States in their motor home going from California to New York and most of the states in between. They also enjoyed trips to Mexico, Canada and Hawaii. They loved traveling with members of the Tsunami Sam RV Club.
In addition to his love of hunting, fishing, traveling and woodworking, Harold loved to garden. Harold especially loved family gatherings and holiday dinners with his family gathered around. He loved his home and his family, without reservation. His family and friends knew him as a loving, tenderhearted and generous man whom they could trust and rely on. He truly loved his fellow man and believed in dealing with each honestly. He lived for those he loved.
One of his greatest joys was to be able to drive safely to the end of his life; and the DMV sent him a five-year license last year.
Harold was a member of Tsunami Sam RV Club, past member of B.P.O.E. Lodge # 1689, R-Ranch Northcoasters Club and lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Harold was preceded in death by his siblings Carl Justice, Dorothy Dunn, Mildred Price, Edna Bain and Doris Winter.
Harold is survived by his wife, Peggy Justice; children Beverly Burtschell (Robert), Crescent City; Norman (LoRen), Eureka; daughter-in-law Sandy Justice, Crescent City; grandchildren Michael Justice (Rachel), Crescent City,; Raelene Justice, Oklahoma; Taylor Justice, Eureka, and Mitchell Justice, Sacramento; great-grandchildren Christopher Hiner, Alyssa, Chelsea, Cayla and Cody Justice of Oklahoma; Ashley Hiner, Skylar and Jacob Justice, Crescent City; and Whitney Trejo, Michael Justice Jr. and Shila Justice, all of Oregon; four great-great-grandchildren; and his faithful, loving dog and companion, Rascal.
