Jerry attended schools in Oregon and California. He was in the class of ’68 at Del Norte High in Crescent City. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1968. He did his basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash. Jerry went to special training in Arizona before being sent to Viet Nam. His tour in Viet Nam had a devastating effect on the rest of his life. He was honorably discharged in February of 1972.
After returning from Viet Nam he married Susan Modrell on June 6, 1970. Their daughter, Jillian Lynn Coffey was born April 12, 1973. Their son, Jack Christopher Coffey, arrived January 17, 1979.
Jerry worked as a landscaper, plumber, and heavy equipment operator. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and target shooting. He was an expert marksman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loleta and Lewis.
He is survived by Susan and their children, Jill and Jack Coffey, along with grandchildren Logan Otremba, Lacey McMahon, Samantha Coffey and Dylan Coffey. Jerry is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many other friends and relatives.
Upon Jerry’s request, he will be cremated. There is a service in Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, August 24, 2012, at 1 p.m. at the National Cemetery.
