She married Earl Coates March 19, 1934, in Monticello, Wash.
After operating cranberry bogs in Washington for several years, the family moved to Brookings and purchased a share in the new plywood plant. Jewel also worked for many years in the cafeteria at Brookings-Harbor School District. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing beautiful flowers. She also loved to travel and go on walks, even into her late 90s. Jewel attended the Smith River Baptist Church in Smith River.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bob” and Joy Coates of Brookings; daughters and sons-in-law Starla and Daryle Norman of Central Point, Judy and Leonard Deel of Coos Bay; sister Genevie Hampton of Olympia, Wash. Also surviving are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Jewel was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, and their oldest son, Gary.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Smith River Baptist Church, 340 Highland Ave. in Smith River.
Private interment will be at the W.J. Ward Memorial Cemetery in Brookings. Redwood Memorial Chapel is assisting the family. Condolences may be expressed online at www.redwoodmemorial.net.
