Obituary: John Robert Gray (June 24, 1931 - Nov. 26, 2009)

John Robert Gray John Robert Gray, 78, of Crescent City died at a local hospital on November 26, 2009.

 He was born June 24, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, to James W. and Alice (Wheaton) Gray.

John enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1950 and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant in 1970. Serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars he earned numerous medals including the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.  While serving, he earned his bachelor’s degree and worked as an accountant with the Military Exchange.

In 1952 he married Martha Ann Mohney in Washington, D.C.  Follow-ing his retirement he was the business manager for the Elsinore Unified School District.  John and Martha have been residents of Crescent City for the past 24 years. 

John was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Masonic Order, Shriners International, and the Elks Lodge. He loved hunting and fishing, and providing for his family.

He is survived by his wife, Martha of Crescent City; daughter, Lorie Ann Smart and her husband, Dennis of Florence, Ore.; daughter, Mary Louise Crabb and her husband, Gregg of Crescent City; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grand-children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings.

At his request, no services will be held.

Donations in memory of Mr. Gray may be made to the Shrine Hospital, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA., 95817.
