John Stanley Smith (1926-2008)
John Stanley Smith was born in Ceresco, Neb., to Clarence and Julia Smith on March 3, 1926. He passed away at home with his family in Crescent City on Dec. 23, 2008, at the age of 82. He left his father’s farm to join the Navy at 18, in 1944. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Stan then met and married Janette Smith in 1947.
After living on a farm for 14 years in Nebraska they moved their family of five children to Crescent City in 1961. He found work he loved in a sawmill. He retired from Miller Rellim in 1992. Stan was a faithful and hard worker.
Stan was an active member of the Fort Dick Bible Church for 43 years. He loved people and enjoyed listeningto and helping others when he could. He served on the church board for many years.
He was active in 4-H as a child and continued all through his years. He served on the Fair Board and was weigh master for many years. Stan loved the fair and all the activities and made many lasting friendships.
Stan went into the business end of commercial fishing as a partner with his son Randy. He enjoyed all the details of commercial fishing and knowing the fishermen. His partnership with his son made their relationship very close and special.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janette Smith of Crescent City, and five children: daughter Julie and husband Lee Wilson of Crescent City; John Smith of Evergreen, Colo.; Dave and Cheryl Smith of Newport, Ore.; Randy and Linda Smith of Crescent City; and Jeff and Kathy Myers of Camino. Stan had 16 grandchildren: Amy Smith, Jacci Brown, Travis Smith, Nicole Rainsberger, Josh Cowger, Hayley Smith, Jaelyn Smith, Cody Smith, Matt Wilson, Rachel Roberts, Becky Collins, Chris Smith, Missy Brown, Jason Myers, Julia Walser, Kaitlyn Myers, and 14 great- grandchildren. He is also survived by sister Bethine Scott of Outlook, Mont., and numerous other family members.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, two sisters and daughter Lynea.

View will be held on Friday, Jan. 2, 2008 from noon to 5 p.m. at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Jan. 3 at 10 a.m. at the I.O.O.F. Memorial Cemetery, Crescent City. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 3, 11 a.m. at the Fort Dick Bible Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
