Maxine Margaret Freiwald passed away Dec. 30, 2011.
Born Sept 19, 1931, in San Francisco, Maxine grew up as an only child in Long Beach, Calif. She graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic High School and later from Long Beach City College with an Associate’s Degree in interior design. During college Maxine met the love of her life, Robert Bruce Freiwald. They married in 1952 and soon after moved to Smith River and later to Crescent City.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Bruce and son Edwin.
She is survived by son David Freiwald and wife Teri of Little Rock,
Ark.; daughters Leslie Smith and husband Mike of Gilroy, Calif.; Nancy
Cardwood and husband Alfredo of Fresno and Emily Napier and husband Jeff
of Crescent City, 11 grand children and four great-grandchildren.
Maxine loved to read and play bridge, was a wonderful cook,
a great seamstress and was known for her great sense of humor and
beautiful smile. Maxine was active in the community volunteering at the
Del Norte Historical Society Museum. She was a longtime member of Beta
Sigma Phi, and Women’s Club. She worked as the librarian at Redwood
School in Fort Dick for 20 years.
There will be a Mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 10 a.m.
Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, followed by graveside services at St Joseph
Catholic Cemetery and immediately following a celebration of life at her
daughter’s home.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations may be made in
memory of Maxine to the Edwin Freiwald Memorial Scholarship, c/o Del
Norte Scholarship Foundation, 275 Elk Valley Road, Crescent City, CA

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel, Crescent City.
