Obituary: Michele Loree Moodie-Cuellar (Sept. 7, 1953 – Oct. 6, 2012)

Michele Loree Moodie-Cuellar was born on September 7, 1953, to Robert and Vivian Moodie in San Jose, Calif. Michele was the firstborn of eight children. Being the eldest of the eight she embraced the role of providing and caring for her brothers and sisters. She graduated from Overfelt High in San Jose, Calif., and went on to work for Memorex.

Michele’s family moved to Crescent City in 1973, where she worked the lily fields of Smith River and Eureka Fisheries as a crab shaker alongside her mother and aunt. Michele wanted a change in life and moved to Tulare, Calif., and worked at Five Hi as a bartender. Her path in life led her to fall in love and wed Benjamin Cuellar; and through the course of their lives together they had four children.

In 1988, Michele’s heart was given to the Lord and she committed her life to serving Him. She was a beautiful example of a selfless, genuine, compassionate person. Michele’s gifts from the Lord were eagerly shared with others while she served on the prayer band for many years. Her way of communicating with people and reaching out to families in need was so deeply inspiring that she has passed on her legacy of love to many generations. She is remembered for saying “I was born penniless, lived in poverty, and died the richest servant of the Lord.” She will be loved and missed by all who met her.

Survivors include her mother, Vivian Moodie-
Malloy of Crescent City; father, the late Robert Lee Moodie; husband, Benjamin Cuellar of Tulare, Calif.; children, Michele Mean of Virginia, Benjamin Cuellar and his three children of Tulare, Calif., Viviana Cuellar and her two children of Tulare, Calif., Joshua Cuellar and his son of Tulare, Calif.; siblings, Frank Moodie, Jack Moodie, Tammy Loftin, Jill Bausch, Wendy Herron, all of Crescent City, Darlene Rico of Tulare, Calif., and Toni Murphy of San Jose, Calif.

Services will be November 10, 2012, at 2 p.m., at the  Bethel Church, 651 ‘J’ Street, Crescent City.
