Obituary: Nick Mageloff (Jan. 29, 1921 – April 29, 2012)

Nick Mageloff passed away April 29, 2012, in Oakland, Calif., at the age of 91. He was born in Crescent City, on January 29, 1921, to Mary and Michael Mageloff. His wife Joan of 67 years passed away April 6, 2012.

He leaves behind his son, Bill Mageloff, daughter, Diane Akers, son-in-law, Steve Schwartzberg, his sister-in-laws Jean Bjornson and Eleanor Peepe, his three grandsons, Nick, Michael and Phillip, their wives and children and many cousins. His brother, Bill Peepe preceded him in death.

Just before WWII, Nick left Crescent City for college in Oakland. He soon joined the Navy. During Navy training in Chicago, he met Joan. On August 9, 1944 he married Joan while on leave. Nick served on the aircraft carrier USS Manila Bay in the South Pacific for 21 months from 1943 to 1945 and participated in the battle of Leyte Gulf. Upon discharge from the Navy, he joined the National Guard and was reactivated during the Korean War. Nick and Joan lived in Hayward, Calif., for 62 years.

Burial services for both Nick and Joan are scheduled for 11 a.m. May 26, 2012, at the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Crescent City. A Celebration of life will be held at the Good Harvest Cafe immediately following.
