He was brought into this world in Kingsley, Iowa, the firstborn child of Lee and Mable March, who lived in Kingsley until they moved to Brookings, Ore., in 1946, eventually moving to Smith River, Calif. Sometime later when his father bought a dairy farm, he worked there to help with chores while he attended Del Norte High School and participated in various sports.
He graduated from Del Norte High School and went to Humboldt State College until he joined the U.S. Army and served in Korea, then was stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J. While there waiting to be discharged he met Mary Tomaino, who became the mother of his three sons, Richard Jr., Tom and Harry. After he left the Army he returned to Del Norte County with his new bride, where they made their home in Crescent City. Working the mill as well as various side jobs, he began his new family, eventually going into the insurance business that became his career for almost 30 years. In 1966 he was promoted into management with New York Life and transferred to Santa Rosa, Calif., until he retired in 1993. Then he returned to Del Norte County and went into motel management at the Pacific Motor Lodge.
When the motel was sold he moved to Smith River and began helping out at the Ship Ashore Motel working the desk, as well as being the Ship Ashore limo driver. Since then he worked for the U.S. Census and the Del Norte Triplicate until his health would not allow him to continue to work.
