Obituary: Richard L. Cairns (1927-2007)

Richard Leo Cairns, 79, passed away at the VA Hospital in Roseburg, Ore., on Friday, March 9, 2007. He was born on October 16, 1927, in Olympia, Wash. He was a 55-year resident of Del Norte County. Richard was in the Army and stationed in Germany shortly after World War II. He began his career as a log scaler in 1950 in Arcata and he scaled for 38 years before retiring from the timber industry. He was a lifelong fisherman, both sport and commercially. Richard had numerous hobbies, deer hunting with his family and making wooden reindeer for Christmas to name a few.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff and daughter-in-law Linda Cairns of Crescent City and Douglas and daughter-in-law Tami Cairns, also of Crescent City; daughter Debbie and son-in-law Steve Lucas of Council, Idaho; sister Darlene Schallow of Seattle, Wash.; brother Robert Cairns of Olympia, Wash.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Helen Cairns.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. March 17, 2007, at Wier's Mortuary Chapel, 408 G Street, Crescent City. Fellowship to follow at his son Doug's residence. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier's Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.
