Richard Machado Nunes, a lifelong resident of Del Norte County, passed away peacefully in his family home on April 9, 2012. He was born August 25, 1938, to parents Frances Meria Alves and Jose Machado Nunes in Crescent City, on their family farm.
He was a hardworking man with a remarkable work ethic, who for most of his life had been a truck driver. He was the owner-operator of Chado Trucking for the past 15 years. He also spent many years as a sales representative for Coast State Manufacturing, selling the wedged hinge pin patented by his brother Anthony. Traveling the country he was able to personally make the business quite successful.
At the age of only 15 he decided to serve our country and entered the Marine Corps, where after completing boot camp his true age was discovered and he was discharged. A determined man, he entered the U.S. Army at the age of 17 where he served for three years.
He was a man of many colorful stories and always good for a joke or two. He had many great accomplishments over his 73 years of life. He started a petition to name a new school in Crescent City after his favorite teacher Mary Peacock, which was successfully selected as the school name. A Harley Davidson enthusiast his entire life, he owned a number of Harleys throughout the years. He was able to build his own Harley in the ’80s which he painted “Carmine Red,” a color others would often refer to as pink, and would quickly be corrected by him. He donated his time and services to several local businesses and residents throughout the years, as he was a man who prided himself on helping those in need. Many people will remember him on the 4th of July as a man who brought a little extra fun and excitement to the town. He was a devoted father to 10 children who will all miss him greatly.
He was preceded in death by his mother Frances Alves, father Jose Nunes, his beloved children Richard II, Cheryl and Allen Machado, as well as his brother Anthony Nunes.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years Charmaine Nunes and children Charlie DeWeese (Stephanie), Shiann and her husband Garret Hogan, Chado Nunes, Shaf Nunes (Lisa), other survivors include his children Telina Nunes (Gussie), Angela Danie’r Nunes (Shane) daughters of the late Elaine Nunes, Dania Horne (Bill); his grandchildren Shannon, Richard, Brandon, Heather, Dale, Tia, Sandra, Kayla, Teal, Trevor, John, Jaden, Aaron, Calem, Graham, Draqe, Skyler, and Jordan; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; his brothers Joe Nunes, and Butch Valpey and his wife Linda; sister Diane Fugate and her husband Roger; his mother-in-law June Smith; as well as numerous lifelong friends.
