Robert F. “Bobby” Burtschell passed away July 13, 2014, at the age of 66 at OHSU Hospital in Portland, following an accident near his home in Gasquet.
Bob was born in Crescent City on July 16, 1947. His great-grandfather was Francis Burtschell, one of Del Norte County’s early settlers, a prominent dairy farmer, and the original owner of the Surf Hotel in Crescent City. His grandfather, Francis Burtschell Jr., was the Del Norte County Assessor and owner of the Ford dealership. His parents were Frank “Junior” Burtschell and Rachel, owners of Burtschell’s Paints.
After graduating from Del Norte High School in 1965, where he was known for dunking basketballs and driving fast in his black GTO, Bob graduated from California Polytechnic State University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science while also using his trademark bartending skills at the Madonna Inn and the Motel Inn. He ultimately moved back to Crescent City where he opened Burtschell’s Floor Covering.
Bob was a fishing and pocket billiards enthusiast, and was a master of jigsaw puzzles. He was a music connoisseur: his love of music was expressed in his LP collection, the largest in the county, and most recently in his endeavor to teach himself to play the guitar. He had a lifelong love of cars and showed his classic black ’65 GTO for years. He was known for his humor and generosity.
Bob was a long-time member of the local Elks Club #1689.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Burtschell; his daughters, Yvette Burtschell of Austin, Texas, and Monique Burtschell of Redwood City, Calif. He has two granddaughters, Katie and Danielle, and a sister, Linda Engelberg of Honolulu, Hawaii, as well as numerous cousins and other relatives.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, July 22, at 1 p.m. at the Cornerstone Church, 1281 Douglas St. in Crescent City with a remembrance gathering to follow at the Elks Lodge.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Assistance League or the Elks renovation fund.
