Ron Stilwell 69, died after a short battle with lung cancer. He was born on May 20, 1942, in San Francisco, to Fran and Lee Stilwell. Ron spent his childhood years in Bend, Ore., and attended the elementary school there. During his teen years, the family moved to El Sobrante. Ron attended junior college and later enlisted in the Army in the early ’60s and served for two years. After an honorable discharge, he became a fireman and police officer in Foster City, Calif., for seven years. Ron was a member of the VFW Post 1381 and the Crescent City Elks Lodge, #1689.
During a short visit to Crescent City in 1972, he bought the Oasis Lounge from its former owner Scotty Lehman. Over the next 30 years, The Oasis, AKA the Heart of the Financial District, became the meeting place for many life-long friends. It also became the headquarters for San Francisco 49ers fans. Ron was an enthusiastic 49ers supporter, as was his best friend, Dearl Morrow. A highlight of their 49er fever was a trip to San Francisco for a championship game.
He will be remembered by those who knew him for his infectious laugh, sense of humor and always being a gentleman to all the women who came into the Oasis; Ron was protective of them.
Ron is survived by Judy Stilwell, wife of 40 years, of Crescent City and his sister Marian Azevedo (Larry) of Morgan Hill, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents Fran and Lee Stilwell.
The family requests contributions be made to the VFW Post 1381, Flag Pole Fund, 810 H Street, Crescent City, CA 95531; Humane Society of Del Norte, 821 Elk Valley Road, Crescent City, CA 95531 or the American Cancer Society, 1301 Northcrest Drive Crescent City, CA 95531.
