Obituaries: Nancy Barker (née Patterson) (Aug. 15, 1931 – Jan. 15, 2011)

Read more...Born in 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and died January 15, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.

Nancy went to school in Winnipeg, and following graduation from high school, spent a few years doing secretarial work at home. However, her best friend from high school had moved to Crescent City to pursue her nursing career and persuaded Nancy to visit, so she arrived here in August of 1953.

Obituaries: James Earl Kelty (Dec. 18, 1935 – Jan. 19, 2011)

Read more...James Earl Kelty 75, of Newport, Wash., passed away in Spokane on Jan. 19, 2011.

James was born in Portland, Ore., the son of George Oscar Kelty and Elva Estella (Birkenfeld) Kelty.

James was raised in Clatskanie, Ore., and graduated from Clatskanie High School. After high school he entered the Navy serving during the Vietnam War at Paris Island as a medic attached to the Marine Corp. He was honorably discharged in 1954. James worked at several different jobs until he went to work as a sheriff’s deputy in Northern California. He retired from the Del Norte County Sheriff’s department in 1986. In 1987 he moved to Depot Bay, Ore., where he drove school bus for Lincoln County School District during the school year and Bnai Brith Summer camp during the summer. In 2007 he moved to Pend Oreille County, where he lived until his death.

Obituaries: Patricia Marie Silva (Nelson) (Oct. 31, 1940 – Jan. 22, 2011)

Read more...Patricia was born October 31, 1940, in Los Angeles, to Kermit and Edythe Nelson at Los Angeles County General Hospital and died January 22, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.

Patricia spent most of her childhood in Korbel, Calif., an unincorporated community in Humboldt County located 1.5 miles east-southeast of Blue Lake. She attended Mitchell School, a one-room elementary school, followed by Arcata High School.

She married Donald Silva and moved to Crescent City in 1958, where they had five children.

Obituaries: Roy Blake (Apr. 26, 1930 – Jan. 22, 2011)

Read more...Roy, a Yurok tribal member, was born April 26, 1930, in Klamath, to Warren and Catherine (Stevens) Blake. He died in a fire at his home in Anderson, Calif., on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at age 80.

Roy was a long-time member of the Operating Engineers Union and his career as a heavy equipment operator spanned more than 50 years. He was employed by the Granite Construction Company for many of those years.

Roy was also a classic car enthusiast and owned several cars. He was very proud of them and thoroughly enjoyed driving one or the other of them in a parade every chance he got.

Obituaries: Andy William “Drew” Brown (Sept. 28 1973 – Dec. 25, 2010)

Andy William “Drew” Brown, 37 of Albany, Ore., passed away December 25, 2010, at his home. He was born September 28, 1973, in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Andy lived in Clear Lake, Calif., then attended grade and junior high school in North Highlands and Red Bluff, Calif. He completed high school and college in Red Bluff. Andy was best known locally as the mechanic for CARE Services in Crescent City.

In 1999, Andy moved to Oregon, living in Roseburg, then moved to Albany in 2004 and started a mechanic shop. He later owned and operated A and D Auto Repair. Andy loved the outdoors, enjoyed fishing, camping and the sand dunes in Florence.

Obituaries: Bobbie Joyce (Rentfrow) Fleshman (July 2, 1936 – Jan. 20, 2011)

Read more...Longtime Del Norte County resident Bobbie Joyce (Rentfrow) Fleshman went to be with her Savior Jan. 20, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital. She was born July 2, 1936, to George and Marjorie Rentfrow in Borger, Tex. She was the wife of Rev. Edwin O. Fleshman, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, Crescent City. They were married August 26, 1955, in San Jose, and remained devoted to each other until her passing.

Joyce is survived by her husband, Edwin, her four children and their families, Micki and Gary Lowe of Lake Elsinore, Calif.,  Alyce and Patrick Pearson of Susanville, Calif., Nicole and Jeff Stout of Crescent City, and Edwin G. and Heidi Fleshman, of Crescent City.


Obituaries: Rufus Edward “Bob” McNamara (Jan. 30, 1918 – Jan. 17, 2011)

Read more...Bob was born January 30, 1918, in Crescent City, to Eva and Tom McNamara. He passed away January 17, 2011, at the age of 92, in the comfort of his home in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., with his family by his side.

Bob and Ruby moved to Orick in 1940, making it their home for over 70 years. For two years he worked as a cheese maker for the Golden State Creamery in Orick. In 1942 they built the Palm Motel and Café, which they operated for 37 years. One of his most memorable moments was catering to the first lady, Lady Byrd Johnson, at the dedication of the Redwood National Park’s Lady Byrd Johnson Grove.

Read more...Terri Sue Jones-Noble, born June 3, 1955, was unexpectedly taken to the Creator on January 13, 2011. She was an exceptional mother, sister, auntie, cousin, and friend. She was a proud and lifelong member of the Yurok tribe and of Del Norte County. She was known for her unending kindness towards others, her amazing traditional artistic skill; especially her carved jewelry, which she was always willing to barter with.

You couldn’t be in the same room with her without getting a smile on your face. She always enjoyed the simple things in life like a good game of cribbage or 10,000. She will be truly missed and always be within our hearts.

Obituaries: Joseph William Gensaw, Sr. ( Nov. 15, 1962 – Jan. 12, 2011)

Read more...Joseph William Gensaw Sr., a Yurok Tribal member, passed away with his family at his side at St. Joseph Hospital on Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at the age of 48.  Joseph was born November 15, 1962, in Crescent City.

Joseph was preceded in death by his father Oscar Gensaw Sr, mother Josephine Gensaw and brother Kenneth Charles.
