Obituary: Peter Keith Downing (Aug. 08, 1955 – Sept. 29, 2010)

Peter Keith Downing, 55, of Gasquet died Wednesday Sept. 29, 2010, in Grants Pass.

A memorial service will be held Sunday,  October 10, 2010,  4 p.m. at Gasquet Bible Church with Pastors James Downing and John Dean officiating.

Downing was born Aug. 8, 1955, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. In 1973, he graduated from Del Norte High School. He attended Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music, College of the Redwoods and Umpqua Community College. Throughout his life, he held various occupations, including owning a parcel delivery service in Coos Bay, working as a maintenance person for Hauser Community Church for more than 10 years and being an electrical apprentice in commercial construction.

For more than 20 years, he volunteered with Boy Scouts of America and served in every role, including Cubmaster, Scoutmaster and commissioner and received the Silver Beaver Award. He also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and built homes. Over the years, he had taken more than 200 teenagers on mission trips to Mexico. He enjoyed serving others, gold panning, fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Downing.

Survivors include his parents, Robert and Erma Downing; three sisters, Lorraine Davis, Nancy DeJesus and Salena Cox; and a brother, James Downing.
