Obituary: Billy Preston (Feb. 18, 1962 – Oct. 30, 2015)

 Billy Preston, 53, of Klamath, passed peacefully in his sleep. Our brother Billy would greet each day with a healthy heartfelt good morning shout to his friends and neighbors. He was intelligent, kindhearted and fun loving. A jokester, a great story teller and a master of inventions. He loved gold panning, fishing, camping and diving for abalone. He enjoyed gambling, Elk Valley knew him as ”BIG MONEY.” He will truly be missed by all.

During past Blackberry Festival he totally enjoyed being the Horseshoe Tournament Overseer and, much to his chagrin, he also enjoyed stamping children’s activity cards to receive a free prize.

A celebration of life will be held at Crivelli’s in Klamath today, Nov. 7, from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Contact sister Linda Witvoet at 707-482-0385 or sister Janine Preston at 707-954-2629.

Obituary: Alice Tosio Desjardin (June 28, 1927 – Oct. 31, 2015)

Alice Tosio Desjardin
 Alice Tosio Desjardin, born June 28, 1927, passed away on the eve of All Saints’ Day, Oct. 31, 2015. She was a loving mother, homemaker, chef, gardener, forager, and member of the Emblem Club for over 55 years. Her kindness, generosity and creativity were well known in the Del Norte community.

She was preceded in death by her mother Maria Tosio, father Louis Tosio Sr., brother Louis Tosio Jr., granddaughter Randee Lee, and son-in-law Nick Desjardin. She is survived by her daughter Marie Desjardin, granddaughter Ramie Gallagher, grandson-in-law Kevin Gallagher, and great grandchildren Darren and Natalee Gallagher of Sacramento; and son Dr. Dennis Desjardin, daughter-in-law Dr. Wipapat Ann Kladwang, and grandson Spenser Desjardin of Pacifica.

A memorial celebration of life will occur at the Emblem Club in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Emblem Club Scholarship Fund. Cards may be sent to 890 Serena Drive, Pacifica, CA 94044 (son) or 91 51st Street, Sacramento, CA 95819 (daughter).

Obituary: Margaret “Pidge” Reiber (August 13, 1944 – November 2, 2015)

Margaret “Pidge” Reiber
 Margaret died on Nov. 2, 2015 at home surrounded by her loved ones after a long illness.

Margaret was born and raised in Orland, California to Adrian and Sadie Brantley. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1962 and worked as a hair stylist and secretary until her health declined. She lived in Orland, Eureka, and Crescent City, calling Crescent City “heaven on earth.” She was known for her kindness, honesty, intelligence, perseverance and beauty.

Death Notices, Nov. 7, 2015

Antonio R. Barrera, 39, died Oct. 28, 2015, in Medford. He was born on Jan. 13, 1976, in Crescent City.

Private inurnment will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Crescent City. Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.

Bonnie Lynn Seats, 51, died in Great Falls, Montana, on Nov. 3, 2015. She was born in Santa Ana on Feb. 10, 1964, and was a Crescent City resident for 18 years. A memorial is planned for a later date.

Obituary: Rita Anne Jolley (Apr. 3, 1934 – Nov. 1, 2015)

Rita Anne Jolley
 Rita Anne Jolley, a lifelong resident of Del Norte County, passed away on Nov. 1, 2015 at the age of 81. She was born in Crescent City on April 3, 1934. Rita was a granddaughter of Del Norte County Pioneer Neils Christensen.

She grew up on the forks of the Smith River where she met the love of her life, Loyd Dean Jolley. They married on Nov. 8, 1950. Shortly after, Loyd built the family home on the Smith River where they raised their seven children and remained there the rest of their lives.

Rita was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

Obituary: Tara Malinda Williams (Aug. 26, 1989 – Oct. 31, 2015)

 Tara Malinda Williams-Moorehead passed away on October 31, 2015, in a tragic motor vehicle accident. She was born in Arcata, California, and grew up in Klamath, California. She was an amazing mother who lived for her family and was a proud member of the Yurok Tribe.

She loved fishing and living a healthy, traditional lifestyle. Growing up, she loved basketball and was an excellent athlete. She canned traditional Yurok foods, such as salmon and deer. She made jewelry and crocheted. She enjoyed cooking and baking for friends, family and the community so much that she pursued her dream of owning her own catering business, “Fish on Stix.” She was proud of her fiance, Cliff Moorehead, and their three beautiful children, a daughter, Karmen, and sons Cliff, Jr. and Louis.

Obituary: Shirley Kay Standiford (Feb. 11, 1927 – Nov. 3, 2015)

 Shirley Kay Standiford, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, California. She was a cherished only child, born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Potrerillos, Chile, South America, to Eugene and Mary (Murphy) Savage.

As a young girl, she was fortunate to have traveled the world with her mother and her father, who worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, living in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain. At age 3 she spoke Spanish, French, German, and English with a German accent. To escape the danger of the Spanish Civil War, she fled with her parents in 1938 at age 11 from the Canary Islands to the safety of their home in Butte, Montana.

Rita Anne Jolley, 61, a lifelong resident of Del Norte County, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 in Crescent City.  

She was a born April 3, 1954 in Crescent City.

Funeral Services are 2 .m. Saturday at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel. Burial follows at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.

Obituary: Ronald Carson Mills (Nov. 27, 1940 – Oct. 14, 2015)

Ronald Mills
 Ronald Carson Mills passed away on Oct. 14, 2015. Known to family and friends as “Carson” he lost a long battle with cancer. Carson was born in Highpoint, North Carolina on Nov. 27, 1940. He spent 26 years in service to his country, 14 as an active duty member of the U.S. Navy and Army and an additional 12 as the company commander of the National Guard unit stationed in Eureka. Mr. Mills started his service in the Navy but moved to the Army for advancement purposes. He was a member of the elite Green Berets and eventually achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of several medals during his three tours of Vietnam. He was awarded several air service medals as well as the Bronze Star. Later in life Mr. Mills wrote a book about his time spent with the service entitled “The Life and Times of Lady Luck.”

Obituary: Wayne Elliot Richards (Jan. 3, 1969 – Oct. 22, 2015)

Read more... Wayne Elliott Richards was born Jan. 3, 1969 in Crescent City. He passed away suddenly on Oct. 22, 2015 at Sutter Coast Hospital. Wayne and his family moved to Eureka when he was a small child. He spent the majority of his life in Humboldt County, returning to live in Del Norte County in May 2015. Wayne was a member of the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation of Smith River. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Wayne was a happy, easy going person, making friends wherever he went.

Wayne is survived by his father, Eugene Richards, his significant other Linda Renshaw of Crescent City; his sister Dawn Richards of Crescent City, his sister, Jill Norwood (Doug) of Maryland and his niece Claire Norwood. He is also survived by his children Courtney Renshaw and her companion Chia Her, Allison Richards, Forrest Carlson all of Eureka; Kiana and Matthew Richards of Salem, Oregon and Marcus Richards of Crescent City; his three granddaughters Kahlia and Malia, Aleena and his brother John Waelty and wife Tara of Eureka; his aunts Elaine Allen and Meredith Keeter, honorary aunts Bev Delay and Karen Ratnour and numerous other relatives and friends.
