Obituary: Margaret Louise Wallace (August 7, 1942 December 22, 2015)

Margaret “Marge” Louise Wallace passed away at the age of 73 on Dec. 22, 2015 from numerous modalities. Marge was born in San Francisco, California on Aug. 7, 1942. She moved to Smith River, California with her family in 1951 where she attended Smith River Elementary School and then graduated from Del Norte High School in 1961. Marge moved back down to the Bay area after graduation to attend beauty school. She married and had two daughters. In 1991, Marge moved back to Smith River, California to raise her grandson and granddaughter.

Marge fell in love with Elvis Presley at a very early age and was eventually able to see him perform live at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. She was an avid 49’er fan and held season tickets while living in the Bay area.

Death Notice, Dec. 31, 2015

James Warren “Too Tall/Jim” Black, 64, died Dec. 7, 2015. He was born on March 18, 1951, in Exeter, California.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 220 E. Macken St. A reception, with the opportunity to reminisce, will follow the service. All are welcome to attend.

Obituary: Raymond Leonard Young (April 15, 1933 December 22, 2015)

 During the early morning hours of Tuesday, Dec. 22, 82 year old Raymond Leonard Young Sr., “Big Ray,” of Crescent City, California passed away at home.

Ray was born in Jacksonville, Oregon on April 15, 1933 to Glen Young and Rachel (Sutton) Young. While serving in the Navy, Ray met his wife Roberta (Stearns) Young in Renton, Washington at a roller skating rink. They were married on Oct. 24, 1954 in Seattle, Washington.

Ray’s parents moved from Applegate, Oregon to Crescent City, California in 1944 to open a bakery. Ray worked at Glen’s bakery until he closed the doors for the last time on Feb. 14, 2009. Ray started at Glen’s as a swamper before being promoted to delivery boy at the ripe old age of 13. Ray eventually took over the business on April 1, 1973. However, he did take a small break from the bakery to serve a four year tour in the US Navy on the USS Hornet during the Korean War.

Obituary: Daniel (Dan) Higgins (December 7, 1937 November 18, 2015)

Daniel (Dan) Higgins
 Daniel (Dan) Higgins was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. When he finished school, he went into the Navy. He married and moved to California where he worked for several years in construction. He eventually became a nurse and worked at Merced General Hospital for many years. Later in his life he worked in residential property management in Merced and Stockton, California, until he retired and moved to Crescent City.

Dan loved to fish!!! Didn’t matter if he was catching anything. . . Dan just loved to fish!!!

Dan was an active member of CASA and felt that it was a very important program. He also volunteered at local food banks. He was in the foster grandparent program. He was very active in the Catholic Church, and one of his proudest moments was when he became a Knights of Columbus member.

James Warren
James Warren (Too Tall/Jim) Black was born on March 18, 1951, to Barbara (Birch) Black and Bruce Warren Black in Exeter, California. He was the second of four children and the only boy in the family. His father was a ranger in Sequoia National Park and his mother was a teacher.

Raymond Leonard Young, 82, died Dec. 22, 2015, in Crescent City. He was born April 15, 1933, in Medford.

Ruby McGarr, aged 98 years, passed away on Dec. 16, 2015 in Crescent City, CA.  She was born April 6, 1917 to Louis and Hattie Campbell (Eutsler) in Weippe, Idaho.

After a long battle with cancer, Bill Richardson passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2015 at his home in Crescent City at the age of 74.

Virginia Ann Smith, 81, died Dec. 12, 2015, in Crescent City. She was born June 29, 1934, in California.

Obituary: James Jim E. Campbell (April 18, 1949 December 14, 2015)

James Campbell
 James “Jim” E. Campbell, 66, passed away in route to medical facilities in Eureka of apparent heart failure on Dec. 14, 2015. He was born on April 18, 1949 in Gates, Tennessee. Jim was a 62 year resident of Del Norte County having moved here from Arkansas to Smith River with his family in 1954.

He grew up in Smith River and was a 1967 graduate of Del Norte High School. After graduation, Jim served with the Air Force where he became a jet engine mechanic in the European Theatre Tactical Wing Division. While stationed in Lakeheath AFB England, he designed and help build a test cell for jet engine bearings, which is still in use today, and has been built at other bases. Jim married Peggy M. Hughart on July 12, 1969.

Prior to his retirement in 2003, Jim was a contractor and floor covering installer. He was a member of the Del Norte County Search and Rescue from 1988 until 1992. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing.
