Obituary: James Manning Chewning (November 24, 1919 – December 2, 2015)

James Manning Chewning
 James Manning Chewning passed away on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 at the age of 96. James was born on Nov. 24, 1919 in Dennison, Texas. He was the second son of John W. Chewning and Catherine Pearson. Not long after he was born, his family moved to Oklahoma then to Los Angeles. James attended school in the Mountain View School District and then graduated El Monte High School in 1938.

He worked for Harlow Aircraft Co. as a sub assembler until World War II started. He joined the Navy in May of 1942. His job was an Aviation Metalsmith (AM). James served 3 ½ years rising to the rank of AM1c (Aviation Metalsmith First Class.) Today’s equivalent would be Aviation Structural Mechanic. He earned the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the WWII Victory Medal and the U.S. Navy Good Conduct Medal. During his service James was stationed at Pensacola, Florida; Mojave, California; with CASU 35 in the Pacific; and on board the USS Reina Mercedes. He along with one million other servicemen were discharged in December 1945 with an Honorable Discharge.

Obituary: Johann Peter Jochimsen (March 11, 1932 – December 3, 2015)

Johann Peter Jochimsen
 Johann Peter Jochimsen, 83, went to be with the Lord on Dec. 3, 2015 in Crescent City, California. He was born March 11, 1932 in Vedsted, Denmark. He was a 64 year resident of Del Norte County.

Johann moved to the states at the age of 19 to be with his sister Marie Tedsen to work on their ranch. Later he served with the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean conflict where he was awarded his US Citizenship. Upon discharge, he met and married Elizabeth, the love of his life for 59 years, together they raised three beautiful children.

Throughout his life he had many jobs including Farmer, Officer for Crescent City Police, Sergeant/Coroner for Del Norte Sheriff Office, paralegal and Del Norte Disposal. Johann was a past member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #1689. He took great pride in everything he did.

Death Notice, Dec. 8, 2015

Jean Rexford, 68, of Brookings, died Dec. 4, 2015, in Crescent City. Jean was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Frederic, Wisconsin, and was formerly a 22-year resident of Del Norte County.  

A celebration of her life will be held 4 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Christian Center, 651 J St.

Arrangements are under the direction of Redwood Memorial Chapel.

Death Notices, Dec. 5, 2015

Murray James Baker Sr., 77, died Nov. 26, 2015, in Crescent City. He was born in California on Jan. 9, 1938.

Private services will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.

Jane Lee Martin, 59, died Nov. 30, 2015, in Crescent City. She was born April 16, 1956, in Eureka and was a 20-year resident of Del Norte County.

Obituary: Ira Main (July 11, 1947 – November 20, 2015)

Ira Main
 Ira Main was born in Covina, California, to Donald and Margaret Main. He moved to Yerington, Nevada, where he graduated from High School in 1964. Shortly thereafter, he joined the National Guard and was stationed in Long Beach, California, for 14 years. He participated in protecting the people and city during the Watts riot in 1965.

Ira moved to the Santa Barbara, California area in the 1980’s where he was employed with General Motors Research. Ira also worked as an oil well offshore driller. He traveled between Santa Barbara and Long Beach for 12 years, a position he really enjoyed. Ira met Pam Lammers in 1989 and moved to Crescent City in 1991, where they have since resided for 24 years. He loved salmon fishing, especially with his very good friend Ron Rooney. Ira was a member for many years of the Crescent City Car Club, working on many cars with friends, and had a great time at our local car shows. Ira also loved his cats, especially “Bear” and enjoyed “In and Out” burgers. He collected an annual T-shirt from In and Out for the last 30 years.

Obituary: Virginia Alice Subbert (May 17, 1926 – November 13, 2015)

Read more... Virginia Alice Subbert, known by many as ‘Miss Ginnie’, passed away in her home in Lincoln, California, on Friday, Nov. 13, 2015, at the age of 89. Ginnie was born on May 17, 1926, in Coquille, Oregon, to Hobart and Viola Campbell and was the oldest of ten siblings. Her family moved to Eugene, Oregon, and she married and had five children. In 1963 she moved to Crescent City, California, with her family and in the early 70s, began working for the County Parks and Recreation Department as a teacher for the preschool ‘Tiny Tots’. She taught for over 20 years, 19 years as the head teacher, and was a beloved teacher for hundreds of children. After her retirement, Miss Ginnie stayed in the community until she moved to Roseville, California, in 2006, where she lived with her granddaughter Monica, grandson-in-law Jeff, and great-grandson Hunter. TheDinnerfamily moved to Lincoln, California, in 2013.

Obituary: Ethel Pauline Harwood (August 2, 1932 – November 30, 2015)

Ethel Pauline Harwood, 83, passed away on Nov. 30, 2015 in Crescent City. She was born Aug. 2, 1932 in California. Ethel was a 75-year resident of Del Norte County.

She loved to play cards, bingo and her dog Ricki. Ethel also loved baseball and her family. Her smile will be missed by so many, she had an infectious laugh. Ethel could not laugh without making you laugh with her.

She is survived by her sister Dorthy Dudal of Arcata, California; stepsons Roger Harwood and Harry Harwood. Niece Laverne and husband Carson Wilson of Crescent City.

Obituary: Barbara Ann Wickersham Brown (May 21, 1946 – November 29, 2015)

Barbara Ann Wickersham Brown was born in Kansas in 1946 and moved to California when she was 11. She then moved to Oroville, California, where she graduated high school. Some years later she met husband Chuck in her 20s, only to lose him after 12 years. They had two children together. She later met Ted Brown and married him. They were married 32 wonderful years. Ted and Barbara moved to Smith River in 1999 where they met wonderful friends. Barbara was always giving, accepting and loving of everyone. She was always willing to lend a helping hand where she could. She will be missed by many.

Barbara is survived by son Jason Maldonado, daughter Kathleen Maldonado, sister Peggy Wickersham, and husband Ted Brown. Services will be held in early January with close friends and family.

John Rudolph Walter Nickelsen, 87. passed away in Crescent City, CA on November 24, 2015. He was born July 7, 1928 in San Leandro, CA. John was a 27 year resident of Del Norte County.

No services are planned.

Arrangements are under the direction of Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.

Wayne D. Bingham born June 1, 1928 in Thomasville, North Carolina, passed away on November 24, 2015 in Crescent City, CA at the age of 87.  He was a 50 year resident of Del Norte County.
