Obituary: Sandra A. Pappas (Nov. 6, 1952 - Apr. 25, 2010)

Sandra A. Pappas died April 25 after a courageous battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

She was born November 6, 1952, in Crescent City. Sandra grew up in Klamath, attending the local elementary school, then moved to Crescent City and graduated from St. Joseph’s Grammar School and Del Norte County High School.  She attended Shasta Junior College and San Francisco State College. Sandra returned to Crescent City and worked first at McKay’s Grocery Store and then at Del Norte County School District, where most recently she was librarian at Castle Rock Charter School.  Sandra was always surrounded by loving friends and relatives.

Sandra was an avid fan of the University of Oregon Ducks. Her interests included U of O football games, gardening, sun-shine, and special times with family and friends. Sandra’s warmth and genuineness captivated all of her medical assistants at Stanford Medical Center. Sandra’s family was especially grateful for the loving cooperation of the Stanford medical staff in allowing Sandra and her family to enjoy Sandra’s  last days in a beautiful garden with sunshine, flowers, lovely trees moving in the breezes, and hummingbirds flitting above her bed.

Surviving are her husband, John Pappas; daughters, Andrea and Kristie; father, Harry Wheat of Crescent City; brother, Wayne Wheat and Tisha Swortwood of Indian Wells; three nephews, Calvin and Ian Wheat, of Indian Wells,  James Keeling, of Crescent City;  niece, Marie Eggen of Sacramento; sisters-in-law, Martha Keeling and husband, Jim, Angela Wis­dom and husband, Bill, and multitudes of loving friends.

On Sunday, May 23, a celebration of Sandi’s life will be held at the Crescent City Cultural Center, 1001 Front Street, Crescent City from  2 to 5 p.m.  “In honor of Sandi, friends are encouraged to wear bright, casual clothing and flip-flops.”

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sandra’s name to the Del Norte Scholarship Foun­dation, 275 Elk Valley Road, Crescent City, CA 95531.

Patricia A. Dyer (Sept. 27,1944-Apr. 17, 2010)

Patricia A. Dyer
Patricia Anne Dyer passed away early Saturday morning on April 17, 2010. Her death was related to Parkinson's disease. Pat was diagnosed nearly 25 years ago. She was 65 years old. 

While working at a drive-in she met Albert Dyer and they married October 5, 1963. Pat and Al moved to Crescent City where they raised their two daughters. Pat and Al shared a deep mutual love and admiration for one another. They remained extremly devoted to each other up until Al's passing June 22, 2006. 

While living in Del Norte County, Pat spent her time deeply involved in her community. She was very passionate about education, including traveling to lobby for improvements for special needs classrooms. She served as president of the Del Norte County School Board and president of the PTA. She coached cheerleading at Crescent Elk as well as chairing many commitees with 4-H and organized numerous events.

Gladys Burns Hue (nee Hall) (1915 - 2010)

Gladys Bure Hue (nee Hall) passed away peacefully at Sutter Coast Hospital.  A fifty-six year resident of Del Norte County, she had a successful career as a school teacher, working in both elementary and secondary education. She taught Speech and led the public speaking and debate teams at DNHS until 1968.  She worked for the DN Unified School District as a speech therapist and speech pathologist. She still maintained contact with many of her former students, who referred to her as their “favorite teacher.”

Loving mother of three: Jeff Pickford, James Pickford and Judith Stameroff.  Grandmother of four grandsons; great-grandmother of two great granddaughters.

Michael Fraser (Oct. 23, 1946 - May 12, 2010)

Michael A. Fraser, 63, of Oroville, California died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born October 23, 1946, in Eureka to Robert and Marge Fraser, Mike was a 1964 graduate of Fortuna Union High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1971 and attained the rank of sergeant. Known as “RV Mike,” he was no stranger to excitement. He was a rodeo clown, a bull rider, a matador in Spain, an avid hunter, fisherman, NASCAR fan and a genuine cowboy. 

Robert R Ballard (Nov. 03, 1954 - May 13, 2010)

Robert “Bob” Ballard passed away Thursday May 13, 2010, in his home with his wife and sister at his side. Bob loved working here in Crescent City.
