Obituary: Shirley Kay Standiford (Feb. 11, 1927 Nov. 3, 2015)

 Shirley Kay Standiford, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2015, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City, California. She was a cherished only child, born on Feb. 11, 1927, in Potrerillos, Chile, South America, to Eugene and Mary (Murphy) Savage.

As a young girl, she was fortunate to have traveled the world with her mother and her father, who worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, living in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, and Spain. At age 3 she spoke Spanish, French, German, and English with a German accent. To escape the danger of the Spanish Civil War, she fled with her parents in 1938 at age 11 from the Canary Islands to the safety of their home in Butte, Montana.

Rita Anne Jolley, 61, a lifelong resident of Del Norte County, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 in Crescent City.  

She was a born April 3, 1954 in Crescent City.

Funeral Services are 2 .m. Saturday at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel. Burial follows at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Wier’s Mortuary Chapel.

Obituary: Ronald Carson Mills (Nov. 27, 1940 Oct. 14, 2015)

Ronald Mills
 Ronald Carson Mills passed away on Oct. 14, 2015. Known to family and friends as “Carson” he lost a long battle with cancer. Carson was born in Highpoint, North Carolina on Nov. 27, 1940. He spent 26 years in service to his country, 14 as an active duty member of the U.S. Navy and Army and an additional 12 as the company commander of the National Guard unit stationed in Eureka. Mr. Mills started his service in the Navy but moved to the Army for advancement purposes. He was a member of the elite Green Berets and eventually achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Army. He was the recipient of several medals during his three tours of Vietnam. He was awarded several air service medals as well as the Bronze Star. Later in life Mr. Mills wrote a book about his time spent with the service entitled “The Life and Times of Lady Luck.”

Obituary: Wayne Elliot Richards (Jan. 3, 1969 Oct. 22, 2015)

Read more... Wayne Elliott Richards was born Jan. 3, 1969 in Crescent City. He passed away suddenly on Oct. 22, 2015 at Sutter Coast Hospital. Wayne and his family moved to Eureka when he was a small child. He spent the majority of his life in Humboldt County, returning to live in Del Norte County in May 2015. Wayne was a member of the Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation of Smith River. Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Wayne was a happy, easy going person, making friends wherever he went.

Wayne is survived by his father, Eugene Richards, his significant other Linda Renshaw of Crescent City; his sister Dawn Richards of Crescent City, his sister, Jill Norwood (Doug) of Maryland and his niece Claire Norwood. He is also survived by his children Courtney Renshaw and her companion Chia Her, Allison Richards, Forrest Carlson all of Eureka; Kiana and Matthew Richards of Salem, Oregon and Marcus Richards of Crescent City; his three granddaughters Kahlia and Malia, Aleena and his brother John Waelty and wife Tara of Eureka; his aunts Elaine Allen and Meredith Keeter, honorary aunts Bev Delay and Karen Ratnour and numerous other relatives and friends.

Brent David Perry, 46, Oct. 24, 2015, in Smith River. He was born Oct. 29, 1968, in Provo, Utah.

Beverly “Bev” H. Wier was born in Portsmouth, Virgina on Oct. 29, 1926. She passed away on Oct. 25, 2015 in Crescent City. Bev has been a Del Norte County Resident since 1945 where her and her late husband Norman Wier established and operated Wier’s Mortuary Chapel. She was a California licensed funeral director until her retirement in 1986. Bev was a past member of the Lake Earl Grange, Moose Lodge, Emblem Club, Republican Women Club, Catholic Daughters of American, American Business Women Association and was Woman of the year in 1972 for the local ABWA, also AARP and Senior Center. She was a past board member of Saint Vincent De Paul Society and Del Norte Historical Society. Bev was past president of the American Legion, past member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Soroptimist and Widowed Person Group. She was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Parish where some of her past activities and committees included the School Auction, Oktoberfest, Convent Renovation and Church decorating Committee.

Ronald Carson Mills, 74, died Oct. 14, 2015, in Crescent City. He was born Nov. 27, 1940, in Highpoint, N.C.

Obituary: Aileen Rose Tipton (Feb 22, 1934 - Oct. 29, 2015)

 Aileen Rose Tipton went to be with the Lord on Oct. 20, 2015 after a lengthy illness. She was born Feb. 22, 1934 in Etna. Aileen served in the Navy as a communications technician. She was a homemaker who loved coloring with her friends, drawing, painting, singing and crocheting. Her family was her pride and joy.

Aileen was preceded in death by her father Albert Cedros, mother Delphine Hartin, brothers Harold Cedros, Pat Cedros and Alvin Cedros.

Obituary: Nadine Modrell (May 23, 1929 Oct. 17, 2015)

Nadine Modrell
 Nadine was born Ramona Nadine Pleasant on May 23, 1929 in Doeville, Tennessee and peacefully passed away with loving family by her side at the age of 86 on Oct. 17, 2015 in Crescent City. She was the fourth child, and first girl of six children born to Clayton “Clate” and Mae Pleasant. Her father was a carpenter and travelled often for work. Her mother took care of the children, gardened and did laundry for the men in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Nadine lived in Doeville and Elizabethton, Tennessee for 13 years until the family moved to Fort Dick for a better life. They later moved to Crescent City, where Clayton Pleasant built numerous homes, including a two story home for his family.

While in eighth grade Nadine left school to work at Seaside Hospital as a cook’s helper.

Kathryn Elizabeth (Westbrook) Roberts, born Feb. 8, 1940, passed away Sept. 8, 2015, among loving family. Kay is survived by her brother Owen Westbrook, daughter Vicki O’Connor, six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of life on Oct. 24, at 2:30 p.m. Please call 707-458-3334 for information.
