Robert Bob Lloyd Long
Robert Bob Lloyd Long, born Aug. 18, 1939, in Placerville, Calif., passed away on Sept. 10, 2013, in Grants Pass, Oregon, at the age of 74. He was a former resident of Del Norte County and had been residing in Grants Pass. Robert was a past member of the Crescent City Elk’s BPOE #1689 for 35 years and a former 45-year member of the Crescent City V.F.W. Post 1381, where he once served as Commander and also a member of the Del Norte Arabs.

A lot of people don’t accomplish even half of what Robert Lloyd Long did in his lifetime. Robert was a true hero, peacekeeper and gentle soul. He served our country in the Navy and U.S. Army Oregon National Guard. Bob had worked for the Crescent City Police Department and served over 20 years with the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. In his retirement he served as Chief of Police in the Oregon towns of Union, Gold Beach, Aumsville and Rogue River, also as Chief in Tulelake, Calif. Robert solved countless criminal cases and homicides while keeping us safe and protecting us for over 35 years in law enforcement. But more importantly, he was a phenomenal person who gave selflessly time and time again. His short battle with cancer only, once again, proved his bravery and love for those he cared most about.

Marcus Norman Storm
Marcus Norman Storm was born on February 20, 1987, in Crescent City and was raised in Hiouchi. He left this world to join God on September 4, 2013.

Marcus was a vibrant young man, so full of life. We will all remember forever his selfless ways as he was ready to help others no matter how busy he was. He could brighten any room with a simple look, or a teasing joke. He was always able to put a smile on our faces with that unmistakable grin that let you know the fun was about to begin.

He completed his Associate’s degree at Umpqua Community College then transferred to the University of Oregon, and was in the process of completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. While attending school full time, he was also working as a skilled journeyman carpenter. He worked long and hard towards a future of so much promise.

He had a love of motorcycles from a young age, traveling near and far to be at the races every chance he was given. He showed us all his ability to take control of life through his riding and looked forward to sharing this with his nephew Trevor and his future children.

Phillip (Moose) Andrew Spargur
The good Lord took Phillip (Moose) Andrew Spargur August 18, 2013, to be with his beloved great-grandmother Ollie James.

He was born on June 13, 1973, to JoAnn James and Dale Kenneth Spargur in Crescent City. He was proud of his Native heritage and proud that he was a member of the Smith River Rancheria. He always said you could never trust those people so he would become one and watch over his own valuables … then laugh his thunderous laugh he had.

Phillip is survived by his mother JoAnn James; sisters Krysti (Nicci) Dunn, Jennifer Barnes, Delfy Monks; brothers Patches Conway, Robert Spargur. He is also survived by his grandmother Frances Snider, great-aunt and uncle Mert and Ellis Waggoner, aunt Beverley Nuttall, aunt and uncle Mary and Rick Anderson, and aunt and uncle Wanda and John Green.

Obituary: Nellie Chisman (Maurer) (Dec. 8, 1934 – Sept. 2, 2013)

Nellie Chisman (Maurer)
On Monday, September 2, 2013, Nellie Chisman (Maurer) left this place for a better one. Mom was born in Crescent City, December 8, 1934, to Harold and Letty Maurer (Cooke). She attended local schools and lived a hard, simple but good life. She met and married Robert (Bud) Chisman and had three children, Robert, Allen and Ranell. Life isn’t always fair and she had to endure the loss of her husband in a tragic accident and then, years later, the deaths of her two sons.

Nellie was a woman of few or many words — those of you who knew her know what this means. She could be very affectionate or extremely tactless, but she never left you guessing! Nellie was cursed with rheumatoid arthritis that robbed her from living her life as she would have liked to, but her strong sense of survival and tenacious spirit kept her going. When she was able to get around, her joys were the salt of the earth! Time spent with family and friends, walks in the woods or on the beach, sunrises, sunsets, picking berries, smelling flowers, listening to birds singing, late- night Yahtzee or beading her beautiful necklaces.
