Michael Hernandez
Michael Hernandez passed away on Feb. 2, at Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif. He was born on Aug.10, 1960, in Montclair, Calif., to Pedro and Sylvia Hernandez.


David Lewis Hubbard (Dec. 27, 1942 – Feb. 1, 2014)

David Lewis Hubbard of Orleans, Mass., died peacefully in his home on February 1, 2014, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in West Haven, Conn., on December 27, 1942, the son of the late Harry B. and Jessie (MacFarlane) Hubbard. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Robin (Gibbons) Hubbard; his daughter, Rachel C. Nicholas and her husband, Joel Nicholas of Montgomery, Mass., and their daughter, Evelyn; and his son, Major Nathan M. Hubbard and his wife, Michelle (Hutson) of Fort Benning, Ga., and their children, Luke, Lily, Claire, Faith and Clay. He is survived by his sister Audrey Mack, brother James Hubbard of West Haven, Conn., and brother Daniel and his wife, Pamela Hubbard of Rochester, N.H. He was predeceased by his sister Allena Conable and brother Harry Hubbard Jr. of West Haven, Conn. 

Dave worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 38 years starting in Connecticut, then moving to the Gasquet Ranger District in California, where he spent more than 20 very happy years driving the forest roads, fighting fires and making friends. In 2005 he and Robin retired to Orleans, where he kept busy cutting trees and brush, tending his burn piles and growing an impressive garden, which he loved to share with family and friends.   

A Celebration of David’s life will occur in June. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations in memory of David L. Hubbard to support the Prostate Cancer Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284; or Lighthouse Repertory Theatre, P.O. Box 171, Crescent City, CA  95531.

Obituary: Delores F. Nova (Oct. 12, 1937 – Feb. 2, 2014)

Delores F. Nova, 76, passed away on February 2, 2014, in Medford, Ore. She was born October 12, 1937, in Hoopa, Calif. Delores (Babs) was a longtime resident of Klamath and Del Norte County. Her first job was that of a caregiver at a resident facility, but her pride and joy was being a stay-at-home mom. She was of the Karuk Tribe and a member of the Resighini Rancheria Tribe in Klamath. For 20 years, Delores was the best moral support a football coach could ask for.


Obituary: Marvin W. Johnson (Feb. 16, 1927 – Jan. 27, 2014)

Marvin was born on February 16, 1927, in Graysonia, Ark., and passed away on January 27, 2014, in Redding, Calif. He served in the Navy during WWII. Marvin was a longtime resident of Del Norte County and retired from Hambro Forest Products in 1989. He will be remembered as an incredible friend and family man; he will be missed by all who knew him.Marvin always had time to help those in need. Even if all he could do was lend a kind word, he always found a way to be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Delores F. Nova, 76, died Feb. 2, 2014, in Medford, Ore. She was born Oct. 12, 1937, in Hoopa, and was a longtime resident of Del Norte County.

Laurel Ann Taylor, 55, died Feb. 2, 2014, in Crescent City. She was born May 30, 1958, in Buffalo, N.Y., and  was a three-year resident of Del Norte County.

Joyce Ann Dixon, 77, died Jan.14, 2014, in Brookings. She was born July 6, 1936, in San Diego, and was previously a 20-year resident of Del Norte County.


Obituary: Kenneth L. Newton (March 4, 1929 – Jan. 25, 2014)

Kenneth L. Newton, age 84, passed away Jan. 25, 2014, due to complications of cancer. 

He is survived by his wife, Elaine; children Sharon Palmer, Gary Newton and Keith Newton; step-children Terri Rose, Pam Jelineo, Tim Shelley, Walt Shelley and Brad Shelley.
