Obituary: Debra Witt (Heggen) (May 17, 1953 – Nov. 10, 2014)

Debra Witt (Heggen), born May 17, 1953, passed away on Nov. 10, 2014, at her home in Everett, Wash., with her loving husband by her side.

Debbie was born in Crescent City to Charles and Grace Heggen. In 1974 she married Douglas Witt. She graduated from Chico State University in 1975. Debbie was a beloved mother, homemaker and also worked outside the home. After moving to Washington in 1985, Debbie began working for Snohomish County as an accountant. Her children remember her as a smart, practical, patient and loving mother who encouraged them to pursue their goals. She was the glue that held and continues to hold her family together even to this very day. 

Death Notice: Sondra Ann Russell

Sondra Ann Russell, born June 24, 1942, in Chehalis, Wash., died Nov. 15, 2014, at the age of 72. She was a 50-year resident of Del Norte County.

Obituary: James Paul Novak (Sept. 4, 1934 – Nov. 6, 2014)

James Paul Novak, born Sept. 4, 1934, in Chandler, Ariz., went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 6, 2014, in Tucson, Ariz. James died at home with his family present; he was 80 years old. He was a father, grandfather and good friend to many throughout his life. He understood the concept of serving others as evidenced by his service to his family, the United States (Army veteran, Korean War) and the Arizona Highway Patrol. Surviving family members are his wife, Judy, of 46 years, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Cindy Novak, son Bruce Allen, daughter Carole Allen, grandchildren Ben and Kelly Novak and Timothy Ambrose.

Obituary: Kindra Lynn Kirkpatrick Lindsey (May 16, 1984 – Nov. 3, 2014)

Kindra Lynn Kirkpatrick Lindsey
Born May 16, 1984, to Randy and Susie Kirkpatrick in Springfield, Ore. Passed peacefully from the arms of the love of her life, Brigg Lindsey, into the arms of Jesus on Nov. 3, 2014, at the age of 30 after a long illness.

She was a miracle baby to start with, having heart reconstruction surgery at just 1 day old. Kindra loved many things in this world: cats, dogs, flowers, cooking, music, holidays. Her sense of humor and practical jokes will be with us always. She was a Goonie at heart and the founder of Team Brent.

Obituary: Shurina Ann Tate (April 25, 1977 – Nov. 7, 2014)

Our loving Shurina Tate, 37, passed away on Nov. 7, 2014. She was born April 25, 1977, in Eureka to Sharon and Edward Tate. She was a daughter, sister, aunt, niece, godmother and loving friend. 

Obituary: Helynn Irene Filgas (Oct. 14, 1947 – Nov. 10, 2014)

Helynn Irene Filgas (Peterson), 67, of Santa Maria passed away on Nov. 10, 2014, after a year-long battle with kidney cancer. Helynn was born in Evergreen Park, Ill., attended elementary schools in Eau Claire, Wisc., and high school in Crescent City. She graduated from Humboldt State University in 1971 and obtained her Secondary Teaching Credential in 1973. Helynn worked in the special education program at Freshwater Elementary School from 1975 until 1995. After moving to Santa Maria in July 1995, Helynn went to work for Orcutt Unified School District. She completed her Resource Specialist Teaching Credential at Cal Poly and worked as an RST at Pine Grove Elementary School from 1996 until her retirement in 2010. Helynn mentored other teachers in the completion of Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

Obituary: Franklin Devon Holik (June 27, 1947 – Nov. 7, 2014)

Franklin Devon Holik died Nov. 7, 2014. On June 27, 1947, he was born in Prague, Okla., to Virginia Lois (Ward) Holik and Victor Devon Holik.

At the age of 8 he moved to Crescent City to live with his great-aunt and uncle, Dora and Lloyd Ward, who raised him and his two adopted brothers, Clayton H. Ward and James Edward Ward, until adulthood. In 1966, he enlisted in the Army, where he became a decorated combat veteran of the Vietnam War in the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment Black Horse.

Donald Allen Wilson, 38, passed away on Nov. 3, 2014, in Crescent City. He was born April 27, 1976, in Walnut Creek. Donny was a 23-year resident of Del Norte County. He grew up in Crescent City and was a happy person who loved to make people laugh. He was always joking around. He worked in construction off and on throughout his life. He was always looking out for other people and helping them any way he could.

Obituary: William “Bill” Clancy (March 5, 1959 – Oct. 20, 2014)

William “Bill” Clancy
Graduated from University of California, Santa Barbara in 1982. Married Terri in 1996 in Benicia. Moved family to Del Norte County in 2003. Retired from Pelican Bay State Prison in 2014. Loving father and husband.
