Maxine Margaret Freiwald passed away Dec. 30, 2011.
Born Sept 19, 1931, in San Francisco, Maxine grew up as an only child in Long Beach, Calif. She graduated from St. Anthony’s Catholic High School and later from Long Beach City College with an Associate’s Degree in interior design. During college Maxine met the love of her life, Robert Bruce Freiwald. They married in 1952 and soon after moved to Smith River and later to Crescent City.

Josephine Agnes Hutchinson passed away in Crescent City, on December 21, 2011, at the age of 98. She was born to her parents John August Bobell and Norma Genevieve Bobell on December 8, 1913, in Vineberg, Calif., and grew up in the Merced area of California’s Central Valley.
Josephine, known to her friends as Josie, married Rolland Hutchinson and raised their three daughters, Bobbi, Linda and Janet, on their apple ranch in the Sebastopol, Calif., area. She loved watching the San Francisco 49ers, camping and hunting with her family and in her later years she developed a love for baseball and former San Francisco Giants catcher A. J. Pierzynski. At the age of 90 she left her home in Sebastopol and moved to Crescent City to live with her daughter Linda and son-in-law Dale. It wasn’t until the age of 95 that she finally put down the power tools and gardening equipment to begin enjoying the relaxation of retirement.

Eugene Lewis Baker, died December 21, 2011, at home in his sleep.
Born March 21, 1937, in Artesia, Calif., He spent most of his working life in San Luis Obispo, Calif., retiring as a fire chief for the state of California. After retiring he established Baker’s Mobile RV repair, helping his fellow RVers stay on the road for nearly 20 years.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia, of Crescent City; son Mike Baker and wife, Leona, of Paso Robles; son Steve Baker and wife, Wendy, of Meadow Vista; and four grandchildren, Nick, Justin, Caleb, and Devin.

Leland R. Hall was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Criterion, Ore., to John Hall and Elsie Fry Hall. He was the 10th of their 11 children. He passed away Dec. 18, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital in Crescent City.
He attended high school in Waldport, Ore., and on Sept. 15, 1940, he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, which later became known as the U.S. 41st Infantry Division.
During World War II, he saw battle in the New Guinea Campaign, Hollandia Attack, and Battle of Salamaua as a technical sergeant. Leland earned the Silver Star during the Battle for Roosevelt Ridge in Papua, New Guinea. In addition, he received the Bronze Star for action in the Southern Philippines and Luzon, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Ribbon and the Purple Heart. He was given a field promotion to second lieutenant, Company C 84th Infantry Advanced Training Battalion, and sent to Australia for Officers Candidate School. Leland was recommended for the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Sherman White Fulkerth, 90, passed away on December 17, 2011, in Crescent City. He was born on June 17, 1921, in Redding, Calif. Sherman was a 26-year resident of Del Norte County.
Sherman was a WWII veteran having served with the U.S. Navy. He was a funeral director for 40 years in the Redding and Shasta area. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge in Crescent City.

• Paul Eugene Hodge, 81, died Dec. 18, 2011, in Bell Gardens, Calif. He was born March 23, 1930, in Crescent City.
Visitation will be held at Wier’s Mortuary Chapel on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until noon with graveside services scheduled for 1 p.m. at the IOOF Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements by Wier’s Mortuary Chapel of Crescent City.

Albert Wayne Webster Turner, 48, of Klamath, passed way on December 15, 2011. Born July 19, 1963, in Crescent City, he was a life-long resident of Del Norte County. Albert was a member of the Yurok Tribe and spent his years as a fisherman, logger, woodworker and artist.
A son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, he will be loved in death as he was in life.

Former Crescent City resident Robert B. Miller, 92, of Grants Pass, Ore., passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011, at Carl’s House Adult Foster Care home in Grants Pass from natural causes.
One of six children, Bob was born on October 8, 1919, in Portland, Ore., to Jay and Mary Miller. He spent his youth in Tillamook, Ore., and moved back to Portland as a young adult.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Fort Lewis, Wash., on June 7, 1944. He received an honorable discharge on May 11, 1946, at grade TEC-5. He spent time at Camp Wolters, Texas; Camp Lee, Virginia; and Fort McPherson, Georgia, as a truck driver. He drove a 21⁄2 ton vehicle hauling troops, supplies, rations and equipment. He did this for five months in the 4200th Service Command Unit. He also made vehicle repairs and daily routine vehicle checks. He received the American Campaign Medal; Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. One of his most memorable experiences was being a chauffeur for General Patton. After discharge he was a member of the enlisted reserves in the Transportation Corps.

Richard William Gawer, 71, died December 14, 2011, at his home.
Born April 1, 1940, in New York City to Herman and Evelyn Gawer, and one older brother, Herman Edwin Gawer, who preceded him in death. He grew up in New York but lived in Oregon, Washington and Minnesota. He and his wife Carolyn moved to Crescent City in August 1985 and remained here until his death.
