Obituaries: Patricia Louise “Patti” Bern (Mar. 12, 1954 – Jan. 6, 2011)

Read more...Patricia Louise “Patti” Bern passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 6, 2011, in San Franscisco. Patti was born to Noah and Ruth Wardlow. Patti was born in Arkansas and moved with her family to Crescent City in 1959. She was a long-time resident of Crescent City. Patti went to local schools, including Bess Maxwell, Crescent Elk and Del Norte High School. She graduated from Del Norte High School in 1972 and worked as a skilled Beautician.

Patti was a classic beauty, fiercely courageous and exceptionally loving. She had a remarkable passion for life and was genuinely devoted to her family and friends. She enjoyed horses, gardening and travel.

Obituaries: Eileen S. Eiker ( Jan. 18, 1941 – Dec. 28, 2010)

Read more...Eileen Eiker passed away at home from a battle with lung cancer, Tuesday, Dec. 28, at age 69.

She was born in Manitoba, Canada, to Russell and Muriel Moen. They moved to the U.S. when she was 17 years old. She graduated high school in the Bay Area where she married and raised her family until she moved to Brookings in 1976.

She was the owner of the Chetco Hotel, Riverside Market and Tavern, and a house painter for over 30 years in Oregon and California.


Obituaries: Margarette Alta (Myers) Matson-Payne (Apr. 18, 1918 – Dec. 19, 2010)

Read more...Longtime Brookings resident Margarette Alta (Myers) Matson-Payne, 92, passed away Dec. 19, 2010, at Curry Good Samaritan Center of complications from Parkinson’s disease.

She was born April 18, 1918, in Buford, Colo., to Lillian “Lilly” and Frances Myers. She was the fourth of seven children.

Margarette moved with her family to Brookings in 1932 where she attended Brookings schools, and graduated from Brookings-Harbor High School.


Obituaries: Roberto Cantu Barrera Jr. ( June 20, 1949 – Jan. 3, 2011)

Roberto Cantu Barrera Jr., beloved husband, proud father and proud grandfather. Passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on January 3, 2011. He was born on June 20, 1949, in Kingsville, Texas. Roberto was a resident of Del Norte County for 35 years. A veteran of the Army, he served during the Viet Nam era.

He is survived by his wife Dolores Barrera and children Robert and Lisa Barrera, Christina Barrera and Antonio Barrera; grandchildren Jaret, Tyler, Tate, Brianna and Grant Barrera; sisters Grace Pettinichio, Oralia Thacker and Ruthy Caracol Barrera; brothers Alfredo Barrera and wife Rosemary and Rene Barrera; many nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.


Obituaries: Chistopher Adolf Bodeker (June 12, 1918 – Dec. 20, 2010)

Chris was born in San Francisco and relocated to Klamath in 1944. He logged for the Shafer family and married Ruth Shafer in 1946. They were married for 56 years. Chris was a partner in a logging mill that flooded in 1955, he had a welding shop for a time and logged and did mechanic work for Don McMillian. At retirement he maintained the Riverside RV Park.

Survivors include Chris and Anita Bodeker, Diane and Ken Weeks; grandchildren Keith Weeks, Ruth Davis and  Martin Weeks; great-grandsons Riley Weeks, Kenny Davis and Christopher Weeks; sister, Vivian Robinson, sisters-in-law Wanda Shafer, Etta Shafer, Grace Whitehead and many nieces and nephews.

Chris enjoyed fishing and hunting for recreation. In later life he just loved experiencing wilderness with his spouse Ruth.

An open house will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Bodeker house.

Obituaries: Gildard Henry Hess (June 8, 1923 – Dec. 27, 2010)

Gildard Henry Hess passed on December 27, 2010, in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Gildard moved to Oakland Calif., from Iowa at 19 years of age and worked as a welder for Key Systems and Industrial Service Co., a sheet metal manufacturing business. He later became part-owner of Industrial Service Co. and eventually full owner and built the business from a few people to well over 150 employees. Gil retired in 1970 and moved to Smith River with his wife,  whom he had been married to for 55 years.

Survivors include wife Ann  of Smith River; many nieces and nephews.

Services are on January 8, at 1 p.m., at Oak Hill Mortuary, in  San Jose.

Obituaries: Marie Ann “Mitzi” Ratnour (Feb. 10, 1920 – Dec. 28, 2010)

Marie Ann “Mitzi” Ratnour, 90 passed away on December 28 in Brookings, Ore. She was born on February 10, 1920, in Virginia, Minn. She was a resident of Del Norte County for 59 years. Mitzi was a longtime active member of St Joseph Catholic Parish.

She is survived by her children William Ratnour IV and his wife Frances, of Smith River, Craig and wife Caren Ratnour of Crescent City, and Thomas and wife Janet Ratnour of Williams, Ore. Mitzi also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Obituaries: June Marie Steward (Feb. 5, 1935 – Dec. 20, 2010)

June Marie Steward, 75, passed away on December 20, 2010, in Crescent City. She was born on February 5, 1935, in Fort Smith, Ark. Having moved from Sacramento to Del Norte County in 1974, she was a 27-year resident. Prior to living in Sacramento, June and her family moved from Fort Smith to Grimes, Calif., in 1949 when she was 14 years old. She graduated from Pierce Joint Union High School, Arbuckle, Calif., in 1953. June met her late husband, Kermit Steward, in 1962 at church in Colusa, Calif. Prior to her retirement, June was employed at Dahlstrom and Watts and worked at the fishery in Crescent City.
