Obituaries: John “Jack” S. Nicholson (Sept. 17, 1918 – April 14, 2011)

Read more...Jack passed away peacefully on April 14, 2011, at Addie Meedom Retirement Home in Crescent City, where he has lived and been loved for the past four years. His son was present to share his last days.

Jack was born in Michigan City, Ind., on September 17, 1918. He was raised along with  younger brother (Dick) and sister (Betty), both predeceased him. Jack’s education began in a one-room country school house.

Due to the family’s extreme economic hardship, Jack’s education was temporarily interrupted at age 16 to enlist with the Civil Conservation Corp. After several months he returned home to help run his father’s lumber mill. Eventually Jack purchased and operated a mill of his own before his family moved to Morton, Wash. Near Morton the family built and operated a sawmill, supplying the railroad with clear-grade railroad ties.


Obituaries: Irene Marion Van Dyke (March 9, 1921 – April 14, 2011)

Read more...Irene Marion Van Dyke passed away Thursday, April 14, at home with her loving family at her side.  Irene celebrated her 90th birthday on March 9.

She was born in Tillamook, Ore., to Alex and Marion Salway.  She married Ernest Van Dyke on September 10, 1947.  He preceded her in death on August 25, 1982.

Survivors include her six children, their spouses and children:  Mary and Jim Daly, daughters Rebecca and Elizabeth, Stephen Van Dyke and son Samuel, Julie and John Rollin, daughters Melonie, Wendy, Monica, Bonnie and son John, Edward and Beverly Van Dyke, daughter Sarah and son Jeffrey, Greta Kirsch, sons Jeremiah and Joseph, daughter Lynsey and Kurt and Christina Van Dyke, son Kyle and daughter Marissa.  Ten great-grandchildren complete the circle.


Obituaries: Stacy Lee Knapp ( April 24, 1967 – April 16, 2011)

Read more...Stacy Lee Knapp was born April 24, 1967, in Red Bluff, Calif., to Bonnie and Victor Edward Knapp. Stacy passed away April 16, 2011, in Eureka, of brain surgery complications. He joins his dad in heaven, who recently passed away as well.

 Stacy was loved by everyone and enjoyed being with family. He was a loving son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend. Stacy always liked to joke and make people laugh. His joys in life until he became ill in 1991, were fishing, hunting, woodworking, driving his 4x4, and he always enjoyed a lucky trip to the casino.


Obituaries: Shirley Ann Sherman (May 9, 1952 – April 18, 2011)

Read more...On April 18, 2011, Shirley Ann Sherman, a Tolowa Tribal member passed away. She was born on May 9, 1952, and passed away at the age of 58.

Shirley was an avid 49’er fan, loved life, her family and the color green. She always had a smile on her face, she was the life of the party and brought joy to everyone she met. Shirley will be dearly missed by her family and will have a special place in all of our hearts.

She is survived by her mom Beverly Jean James, brothers Darrell Joseph Sherman (Kathy); Cecil Hansen Sherman, Jr., Douglas Alan James, sister Diane Sue Wilson (Robert), Debra Elaine Sherman; uncles Ted and Beverly Moorehead, Richard Lloyd Moorehead, grandchildren Stacie Grace Gorman and Nikita Ann Gorman. Her special friend Jerry (Jerrykins) McCovey and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.


Obituaries: Jeanette Elizabeth Ashford (Nov. 27, 1946 – April 13, 2011)

Read more...Jeanette Elizabeth Ashford, former resident of Dublin and most recently living in Concord, was born November 27, 1946, in Crescent City. She passed away April 13, 2011, after a valiant and blessedly short battle with cancer. She attended Crescent Elk Elementary, then graduated from Del Norte High School. She attended Humboldt State College in Arcata, and graduated from Chico State College with a degree in economics.

Jeanette blessed us all with her sharp wit, courage, optimism and her devotion to her family and many wonderful friends.

Obituaries: Floyd Richards Sr. (Sept. 19, 1922 – April 15, 2011)

Read more...Floyd Richards Sr.,  88, was a lifelong resident of Smith River. He passed peacefully in his sleep Friday April 15, 2011, at Ocean Park in Brookings. He was the eldest surviving male member of the Tolowa Tribe.

He was born September 19, 1922, in Smith River to Edward & Ida Richards

He joined the U.S. Army in November of 1942. He was a member of Company K, 349th Infantry in the 88th Infantry Division, stationed in Italy during WWII, where he earned three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged after WWII ended.

He met Elinor Whipple in Crescent City on January 6, 1944, while on a short leave and they married on September 19, 1945.

They had four children, Jesse, Jeanine, Floyd and Frank.


Obituaries: Joanna Ellen McRobert Nov. 27, 1919 – April 11, 2011

Read more...Joanna Ellen McRobert passed away peacefully April 11, 2011 in Brookings, Ore., after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Born Nov. 27, 1919, in Astoria, Ore., to David B Easter and Bertha L. nee: Thomson, she was a 54-year resident of Crescent City.

Joanna graduated from Forest Grove High School in Forest Grove, Ore. She married Curtis McRobert and they lived in Gales Creek, Ore., where they raised their four children. She was active in PTA, Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls and 4H while her children were growing. Joanna enjoyed taking her kids to “the beach” and on camping trips at their “Place” on the Wilson River.

She worked in the kitchens of several restaurants throughout Del Norte County, the last being Ship Ashore. Joanna enjoyed music, gardening (especially healing herbs), cooking, beach combing and photography. She loved all animals.

Obituaries: Gina Marie Russell (Aug. 12, 1960 – March 24, 2011)

 Read more...Gina Marie Russell, 50, born Aug. 12, 1960, in Hibbing, Minn., passed peacefully on Thursday, March 24, at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles (Chuck) Saccoman of Hibbing, Minn.

She graduated from Hibbing High School in 1979. She was a fisherwoman in Alaska, Coos Bay, Ore., and in Crescent City. She resided in Crescent City and loved the fishing life as well as being in the gorgeous redwood country and clean, clear waters.
