Survived by his wife of 43 years, Jean, children Sandra Lawrence and husband Jim, their children Jessica, Deborah, Matthew and Rachael and greatgrandson Thomas; Sheri Gordon, her children Christina, Courtney, and great-grandson Gilberto; Shawn Wylie and husband Jason and their children Halie, Ashley, Zachary, Nathan, Julia and Cameron; son Shane and his wife Melissa and their children Savannah and Shane Jr. Also survived by sister Sharon Carlsburg and her husband Bill, their two children Steven and Theresa and many nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by sisters Joann and Linda, step-parents Ivory and Rita Peek and father Stanley Rexford Sr.

Obituaries: Kenneth Sanderson (Nov. 23, 1924 – Feb. 27, 2011)

Read more...Kenneth Sanderson went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 27, 2011, in the company of his loving family. Kenny was born Nov. 23, 1924 in Orleans, Calif., and was raised on the family farm at Starwin on the Klamath River. He traveled by school boat down the river to attend the local school.

In 1937, Kenny attended the Sherman Institute in Riverside, Calif. He was active in boxing, wrestling and football. In 1941, he wrestled for the Olympic tryouts at the Oakland YMCA gym. Kenny joined the United States Marine Corp in 1941 at the age of 17. He served in Guam, Midway and Pearl Harbor. While he was in the service he boxed in the lightweight class against the Army and Navy in the Honolulu Bowl. In 1946 he was honorably discharged from the USMC.

Obituaries: Lena Isles McCovey Nicholson (May 26, 1919 – Feb. 28, 2011)

Read more...Born May 26, 1919, and died February 28, 2011 in Florence, Ore., while visiting her niece.

Lena was a Yurok Tribal Member born in Requa, Calif. She later met and married her husband of 30 years, Isaac McCovey. She married her second husband Paul Nicholson and moved to Fortuna.

She decided to go to college at the age of 47. She was offered a job at the Employment Development Agency and remained there for 16 years until she retired. During her years at the EDD, she helped many natives finish school, and get jobs that turned into careers. When she retired from the EDD, she went on to work as an Older Worker Specialist for the Senior Community Services Employment Program.

Obituaries: David Martin Criteser (Oct. 1, 1951 – March 1, 2011)

David was born Oct. 1, 1951, in Crescent City. He grew up in Smith River and graduated from Del Norte High School. He then lived, worked and raised his family in the Smith River area.

He is survived by his mother, Phyllis; sisters Rayona, Janelle and Dawn; wife Lisa; children and stepchildren Dionne, Courtney, Joshua, Sydney, Josh and Jenna; grandchildren Marjorie, Riley and Kaiden; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

There will be a memorial potluck for David on Saturday, March 5, at Howonquet Hall Community Center in Smith River at 12 p.m.

Obituaries: John Johannessen (June 3 1933 – Feb. 22, 2011)

John Johannessen was born June 3, 1933, in Lassa, Nigeria to missionary parents, Kaare and Mathilda (Matti) Johannessen.  He passed from this world to be with Jesus on Feb. 22, 2011, in Burney, Calif., where he fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

John’s early childhood was spent with his siblings in Africa and they returned to Oslo, Norway, in 1940. They endured WWII  and their parents moved to Southern California in 1951. John followed his parents in 1952 after he finished school. He was soon drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War and became a U.S. citizen while he served our country. He had a great love of the United States and remained here the rest of his days although he always loved his legacy of being a Viking.

Obituaries: Dennis “Buzz” Lamoine Houtz (Aug. 8, 1936 – Feb. 26, 2011)

Dennis “Buzz” Lamoine Houtz passed away on Feb. 26, 2011, in Crescent City. He was born on Aug. 8, 1936 in Burlington, Iowa. He was a veteran, having served with the Army.

Dennis worked at Latchford Glass of Huntington Park for many years. He was able to get his general contractor license in 1983, establishing his own company, which included building and remodeling of all kinds. He was a master in his own craftmanship. Dennis was truly a carpenter by heart. Even in retirement, he was busy fixing the family home and building birdhouses. He was an active member of the Crescent City Fuchsia Club.

Obituaries: Mildred Anne Campbell (May 26, 1936 – Feb. 25, 2011)

Read more...Mildred Anne Campbell (nee Thompson) died peacefully on February 25, 2011, in Crescent City. She was 74. She was born on May 26, 1936, in San Diego.

Mildred is survived by many, including her brother Kennie (Tommy) Thompson from Sangerville, Maine, sisters Louise Gomez and Paula Flores both of Hermet, Calif., and sister Dorothy (Dottie) Thompson of Ore.

Her children Yvonne Campbell and David Campbell, and Violet Howser, all of Crescent City, Connie Blodgett of Spring Valley, Calif., Kennie Campbell of Vancouver, Wash., and Yvette Caron of Sparks, Nev.

Obituaries: Jeanine (Williams) Pritchett (Jan. 4, 1942 – Feb. 24, 2011)

Read more...Jeanine (Williams) Pritchett, died Feb. 24, 2011, at Sutter Coast Hospital after a short illness. Born in McGee, Arkansas on Jan. 4, 1942 , the Williams family moved to Del Norte County in 1956. She is best remembered as owner of the Dock Cafe before becoming head cook at the county jail. She was employed there until her retirement.

Jeanine is survived by her husband Clifford Pritchett, sisters Pamp Fincher of White City, Ore., Dorthy Garner of Cave Junction, Ore., Vickie McClure of Klamath Falls, Ore., brothers Sam Williams of Brookings, Ore., Raymond Williams of Lebam, Wash., Gilbert Williams of White City, Ore., and Nick Williams of Crescent City.

Obituaries: Michael Dolan Campbell (Nov. 25, 1947 – Feb. 23, 2011)

Read more...Mike was born November 25, 1947, in Memphis Tenn. He grew up in Memphis, graduated high school in New Jersey and went into the Air Force after high school. His final military station during Vietnam was at the Klamath Air Force base, where he discovered the beauty, charm and wonders of the North Coast.

Mike settled in Crescent City, becoming an avid outdoorsman spending most of his time fishing on the Smith, Klamath and Chetco rivers. Many more salmon and steelhead will spawn due to Mike’s passing.
