Obituary: Dorothy Maxine Merga (Jul. 16 1926 – Nov. 13, 2010)

Ms. Dorothy Maxine Merga passed away on November 13, 2010, in Crescent City, her hometown of 26 years.  Dorothy was born in San Francisco, on July 16, 1926, to Oliver Rundell Geyer and Ester Irene Erwin Geyer, and she was one of six children. She had worked at the Veteran’s Home in Yountville, Calif.

She loved doing crafts in her spare time and loved being with family and friends.

She is survived by Joann Pauline Anderson of Duvall, Wash., Julia Ann Cortinas of Somerville, Texas, and Janet Lynn Carpenter of Calistoga, Calif. Also numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Obituary: Carl Price (Nov. 1, 1920 – Nov. 16, 2010)

Carl Price, 90, died Tuesday, November 16, 2010, at his home in Crescent City with his son, John Webb, at his bedside. Carl was born November 1, 1920, in Geneva, Ohio.

As a child, he went to school for his first 10 years in a one-room schoolhouse where his mother taught, and where Carl complained, “I spent a lot of time standing in the corner.” He was an adventurous youth and at age 15 ran away from home to try his hand at cowboying. He rode the rails down to Mexico and ended up surviving the ordeal by washing dishes in a cantina on the Texas-Mexico border. He eventually hopped a train back to Geneva and in his high school years led the football team. He also  worked as a caddie for 10 years at the Geneva Golf Club, where he developed a passion for the game and met some of the great golfers of the day.

Obituaries: Zita Maxine Gerling (Nov. 25, 1918 – Nov. 18, 2010)

Zita Maxine Gerling passed away on November 18, 2010.  She was born on November 25, 1918, in Hancock, N.Y., to Charles and Zita McGranaghan and was one of seven children.

Zita attended Merch High School and St. Mary’s College in Omaha, Neb. She worked as a switchboard operator in Chicago, and during the war years worked at a Defense plant also in Chicago. Zita married Herman Gerling, October 16, 1948, in St. Vincent Church, Los Angeles, residing in Rockport, Calif., near Fort Bragg, then moved to Crescent City in June  1957.

She  was a substitute teacher for the Del Norte High School District in Crescent City and ended her working career as a cafeteria cook with Ann Fleshman at St. Joseph Catholic School.

• Jane C. Hitchman, 83,  died Nov. 10, 2010, in Crescent City.  She was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Salt Lake City, and was a six-year resident of Del Norte County.

Obituaries: Harvey James Bigham (July 16, 1929 – Nov. 13, 2010)

With family by his side, Harvey James Bigham passed away on Saturday, November 13, 2010. He was 81 years old. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Wanda Bigham, his sons, Stephen and Randy Bigham, daughter Linda Lochard, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, his brothers Donald and William Bigham, many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eula and Clyde Bigham, brothers, Jack and Bobby Bigham, sister LaReca Reynolds, and granddaughter Amanda Bigham.

Harvey Bigham was born in Santa Anna, Coleman County, Texas, in 1929. He moved from the San Joaquin Valley to Crescent City in 1954.

Obituaries: Renee Buesen (Feb. 27, 1944 – Oct. 19, 2010)

Renee Buesen passed away suddenly in Crescent City, on Oct. 19, 2010. She was 66.

Renee was born February 27, 1944, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Lowell and Dorothy (Maire) Beard.  She grew up in Minnesota, but later moved to Salem, Ore., where she graduated high school in 1962. In 1972, Renee moved to Hayward, Calif., where she lived for many years until moving to Glendale, Ariz., and then to Reno, Nev., before finally moving to Crescent City in 2002, where she enjoyed retirement at the rainy and foggy northern coast as well as being able to live very close to one of her daughters and a few of her grandchildren. Although primarily a housewife during her earlier years, later in her life she worked various jobs, most notably as a night clerk at various hotels, which she enjoyed and which suited her perfectly, especially being the night owl that she was.
