Obituaries: Helen Marie (Brannin) Tintle (July 14, 1916 – March 12, 2011)

Read more...Helen Marie (Brannin) Tintle, 94, died March 12, 2011, in Crescent City. She was born July 14, 1916, in Bulter, Morris County, New Jersey, the oldest of three children to Horace and Eva (Vreeland) Brannin.

She is survived by her children Carol Ann Molloy and husband Alan of Manifee, Calif., and Marlene Tintle Young and husband Michael of Crescent City. She is also survived by grandchildren, Cindy Paul (Becky and Katie) of Manifee, Calif., Scott Molloy (Rachel, Tiffany and Halie) of Golden Valley, Ariz., Jeffrey Anderson and wife Julie (Austin and Abigail) of McKinleyville, Bradley Anderson (Kallie) and Corinne Higgins and husband Kennith (Nick and Derek) of Crescent City.

She is also survived by her step-grandson Steven Young and wife Cindi of Crescent City, (Daniel from Colorado), JaCinda (Katherine and Sophia), Gregg  (Jacob and Michael).


Obituaries: James Joseph McQuillen, Sr. (Jan. 19, 1936 – March 11, 2011)

Read more...James Joseph McQuillen, Sr., aka “Mac,” passed away peacefully with his family at his side on March 11, 2011, after a long illness. He was born Jan. 19, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from Hicksville High in Long Island, N.Y. in 1953. One of his favorite stories of his high school days was when he tackled NFL football legend Jim Brown.

Before his 26 years in law enforcement, he served four years in the United States Air Force, being stationed in Sado-Shima, Japan and then Requa 777TH Radar Station in Klamath,  where he was an aircraft control and warning operator. He also served as one of “New York’s Finest” (N.Y.P.D) before returning with his first wife and their family to Klamath. He began his career with the Del Norte County Sherriff’s Office in 1966 and retired after more than 20 years of law enforcement. He was a sergeant and a range master/fire arms instructor for the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office. His radio call number was 2-3-7. Jim took great pride in serving Del Norte County.

Read more...Mary Francis Burgess, 85, of Smith River, passed through this life to join her mother, Jenny Lynn Olmsted, father, Hugh Olmsted, and first-born daughter, Lesie Maine, on March 3, 2011, at the Rogue Valley Hospital in Medford, Ore.

Mary’s greatest gift in her life was her unconditional love for her huge extended family and many friends.

Mary was born in Klamath Falls, Ore., on March 30, 1925. During World War II, Mary drove a cab in Richmond, Calif., where she met and married Lloyd Frances and settled in Fresno, Calif. After Lloyd’s death in 1971 Mary entered the real estate field, in which she was very successful. Her favorite times were spent water skiing, dancing and vacationing in Hawaii. While in Oahu in 1974 she met Ned Burgess. After a 2-year long-distance courtship Ned moved to Fresno and worked in the real estate field with Mary. They married on Oct. 6, 1976. In 1979 they purchased two motels in Lake Tahoe, Calif., selling out in 1983 to travel around the United States for the next year and a half. Hawaii became home in 1985. On a trip to the mainland they found Salmon Harbor Resort in Smith River and purchased it in 1990. This has been their home for the past 21 years.

Obituaries: Tiffany Ann Smith (Dec. 12, 1975 – March 10, 2011)

Read more...Tiffany Ann Smith, 35, passed away on March 10, 2011, in Crescent City, after a year and half battle with cancer. She was born on Dec. 12, 1975, in Berkeley. Tiffany was a four-year resident of Del Norte County. She spent time at the Marine Mammal Center as a volunteer. Most importantly, Tiffany loved being a mom and devoted all of her time to her son. She enjoyed her family and friends.

Tiffany is survived by her husband Bryan Smith, son David Christian Smith, and mother Velda Westman, all of Crescent City, and her parents-in-law Kermit and Sharon Smith of Woodland, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her father David Westman.


Obituaries: Rev. Joyce Swett (Aug. 13, 1932 – Feb. 22, 2011)

Read more...Rev. Joyce Swett, 78, of Modesto, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011. She was born Aug. 13, 1932, in Fort Dick, to Albert and Maude McKay.

Joyce graduated from L.I.F.E. Bible College in 1954, and along with her husband, Rev. Donald Swett, entered a lifetime of ministry with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. They served together as Evangelists, Assistant Pastors, and Senior Pastors. Widowed in 1987, Joyce continued to faithfully serve others, encompassing 57 years as an ordained minister.


Obituaries: Linda G. Lawrence (Mead) (Feb. 28, 1949 – March 4, 2011)

Linda G. Lawrence (Mead), born in Scotia, Calif., on Feb. 28, 1949, died March 4, 2011, in Gasquet.

Linda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She devoted her life to her family and was very involved in her community. She worked at Crescent Elk Middle School for many years, was a member of several local churches, a leader of Girl Scout troops, and was a volunteer at the Pregnancy Care Center.

Linda is survived by her husband of 43 years, Ordon Lawrence, and their four children, Tonya Lawrence and partner Crystal Ellis of Portland, Ore., Susan Ratnour and husband Bill Ratnour of Crescent City, Christy Lawrence and Misty Lawrence of San Diego. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Shauna, Billy, Sydney and Bridger Ratnour. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Moke and Joyce Mead, and sister, Sheila. She is survived by sisters Janet, Shirley and Kathy and brothers Kenny, Mike and Arnie.

Preceded in death by sisters Joann and Linda, step-parents Ivory and Rita Peek and father Stanley Rexford Sr.
