“God doesn’t have problems. He has plans.” Those were the words spoken by Ray 17 months ago when given an “incurable cancer” diagnosis. His valiant battle ended Nov. 6, 2013, when he stepped into the loving arms of Jesus. God’s plan lives on through those he touched.

Raymond, born Dec. 20, 1949, has enriched the lives of countless individuals through his church leadership and as owner/teacher of Sunnybrook Farm Preschool.

Ray graduated from Del Norte High School in 1968. After working as a builder for many years, he returned to college, where he earned a degree in School Psychology and Early Childhood Education.

In 1993 Ray married childhood friend Becky Wheatley, and for 20 years they have operated their beloved preschool. Ray and Becky are also devoted to their church and serve as leaders with their dear friend and Pastor, Cassie Wyland. Ray served as leader and founder of Faith In Action Men’s Ministry and was passionate in his dedication to its work.

Ray is survived by his wife, Rebecca; son Ryan of Seattle; daughter Tara Sanders (husband Justin) of Corvallis, Ore., and their mother, Marla Sanders; also, stepchildren Tracey Carr (wife Bitia) of Boise and Melinda Nickols (husband Joe) of McKinleyville, Ray’s mother Zelma Potenski of Crescent City, mother-in-law Phyllis Tedsen of Fort Dick, brothers Bill and Jim of Crescent City, and sister Patti Hall (husband George) of Arizona. He also leaves 10 grandchildren.

Ray expressed a genuine love and appreciation for Dr. Allen and his incredible staff, and his dear friends who serve at the St. Joseph Infusion Center.

Friends and family and current/former Sunnybrook students are encouraged to attend a very kid-friendly celebration Saturday, Nov. 16, at 10 a.m. at Faith Center Foursquare Church, 1032 Bay St., Eureka. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Faith In Action c/o Eureka First Baptist Church 422 Del Norte St. Eureka, CA 95501.
