4-H’ers compete in Willits

Editor’s note: The Del Norte 4-H column appears every four weeks. Today’s column is written by Christine Jones.

On Saturday, April 21, local 4-H’ers traveled south to Willits to compete at Regional Presentation Day.

Our region consists of four counties:  Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Lake. Regional Presentation Day rotates each year between the four counties. This year six local youths competed at regionals.

One competitor presented a power point, while five others made table-top presentations.  Participants receiving gold awards are eligible to attend State Presentation Day.

Gold: Ana Machado and McNeely Olson

Blue: Hannah Butz, K’Marie Magray, Juliane Margarino and Simone Margarino

Fashion Review

The 4-H Fashion Review was held on Saturday, April 21, at the Family Resource Center.

4-H’ers who completed the clothing and textiles project had their outfits judged by three local judges and then presented them to the audience.

Primary: Catherine Taylor, participation.

Junior: Katie Wilbur, gold, county winner.

Caryn Taylor, gold

Zoe McNanus, blue

Intermediate: Cambria Taylor, gold, county winner

Senior: Tara Wilbur, gold, county winner

Bunny Extravagazana

On Saturday, May 19, local 4-H rabbit and cavy project members attended the first Humboldt County Rabbit and Cavy Breeders’ Association Bunny Extravaganza at Bayside Grange in Bayside.

The event included a practice rabbit show, showmanship competition, bunny hopping, breed ID contest, knowledge contest, pet contests and demonstrations.

Bucket calf project

Each spring, Sunrise 4-H, along with Alexandre Dairy, offers a bucket calf project.

The project is open to 4-H members 5 years and older and runs for about 6 weeks. Children get to “adopt” a bucket calf on the dairy. Bucket calves are young dairy cows still needing to be hand fed and have extra care.

The children learn about dairy cows, breeds, feeding and care.

Meetings are once a week and children are encouraged to visit throughout the week to work with their calf, feed it and lead it on a halter. At the end of the project, there is a show where children can show family and friends how their hard work has paid off.
