The sun is starting to make regular appearances in our little corner of the North Coast and our 4-H’ers are happy to see it! Gardens are sprouting and growing, animals are frolicking in the green, warm grass and our local 4-H kids are eagerly anticipating summer vacation!
With school nearly out and only two months until the Del Norte County Fair, the kids are fussing over garden veggies, planning the last-minute details of the artwork they will submit and fitting their show animals.
Our community can be proud of the commitment our children show to their projects and the life skills they learn along the way.
Bucket Calf Project
How many times have you poured your child a tall glass of cold milk? Have they ever asked where the milk came from? The Alexandre Dairy partners with 4-H every year to answer that question with hands-on experience in the Bucket Calf Project. Children 6 years and up are invited to come out to the Alexandre Dairy in Fort Dick. The first meeting is Tuesday, June 17 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. Children will be able to pick out a young heifer calf to work with throughout the summer. Project meetings occur on a weekly basis and then children can show the calf at the fair on August 2 in the Bucket Calf show.
Families will learn basic care for cows, the production cycle, including feeding and calving, and they’ll even get to watch the milking parlor in action. This wonderful project allows children to see how agriculture in our own backyard impacts our daily lives.

Soup Supper planning
The Del Norte 4-H Council is already planning Soup Supper 2014. If you have ever attended this wonderful event, you have seen the inner workings as soup is served, bids are placed and live auction items are carried through the aisles to lucky buyers.
Have you ever wanted to help? We love our volunteers and would be appreciative of any assistance you could give, either during Soup Supper or behind the scenes during our planning stage. Can’t donate your time? We are also seeking auction items and sponsorships from local businesses or individuals. Every little bit counts and secures the program for another year in Del Norte County.
Thank you, Del Norte County, for your ongoing support of 4-H. We wish everyone a safe and joyful summer vacation.
