The Lighthouse Quilt Guild is preparing for its 11th annual quilt show, “Hot Needles, Cool Quilt,” to be held Aug. 20-21 at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds in the main building.

Cassie Simonson is the featured quilter at this year’s show.

Cassie made her first quilt when her children were little, but other things got in the way and she did not quilt again until retirement. She and her husband were RVing for 10 years and it was during that time that she made a Dresden Plate quilt with a guild in Brenda, Ariz.

She had been beading and creating jewelry, but on her move to Crescent City, her entire stock of beads and jewelry was stolen. She was lamenting the loss at church when a member of the Lighthouse Quilt Guild overheard her and invited her to visit the guild.

Cassie enjoys the guild and all the comradery she finds there. She shines in her creativity with cloth. Her work is done stitching by hand and by machine. She hopes to create a quilt for each of her four children, 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Cassie feels that her quilting gives her a way to express herself and to release her energy in a creative way. Her mind is always making that next quilt.

Other displays planned at the show are antique quilts, memorial quilts made by Susi Willamson and a quilt made in the 1960s by the Fishermen’s Wives group. Vendors will be on hand with the latest in quilting supplies, as well as the Guild’s “Country Store” where members will sell their wares.

On Saturday attendees can vote for their favorite quilt among the 100-plus entries in several categories. There will be two opportunities to win a quilt on Sunday at 3 p.m. with proceeds to benefit the guild’s scholarship projects.

The entry fee is $3. Lunch will be available. The show runs Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Call Patricia McGuire at 464-3310 for information.
