Around Del Norte: 30,000 miles and counting

Couple hasn’t stopped walking since moving to Pebble Beach from Southern

They call themselves “The Walkers.”

And deservedly so. Former triathletes Penny and Dick Fleming, 68 and 72 respectively, walk eight miles every day, rain or shine.

“We’ve walked 30,000 miles since we’ve been here,” said Penny. “People just look at us and say, ‘What?’”

Tired of the smog and traffic in Southern California, the Flemings moved to Pebble Beach Drive in Crescent City 12 years ago after retiring as microbiologists in Pasadena. “It’s so nice here,” said Penny. “This is like heaven.”

Their destinations are the harbor on one day, the next up to Washington Boulevard and through town. Penny said it takes them about two hours, “and of course we have to go by all the garage sales and the Farmers Market on Saturday.”

This summer they noticed something worth taking note of. Amazed by the number of out-of-state license plates they were seeing on their walks, they decided to start keeping track of all the different states as of June 30.

They’ve since seen plates bearing every state name – except for West Virginia.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Penny said. “We’ve seen most states twice,” including Alaska and Hawaii. “And we’ve seen four from Virginia.” Go figure.

“It just goes to show how many people come to our area.”

Even without West Virginia, it all adds up to a sure sign of a good tourist season.

One summer feast to go

One of the best-kept cuisine secrets in Del Norte County is the buffet spread that Kamp Klamath RV Park and Campground puts out every Saturday night throughout the summer.

As many as 100 diners show up regularly for an all-you-can-eat barbecued salmon and chicken feast. It comes with all the sides, including organic vegetables from the garden onsite, for $14.95 per diner.

Did I mention fresh? The veggies are picked the morning of the event, and, according to Kamp Klamath owner Aaron Funk, the salmon are still swimming in the river just hours before the grill is fired up.

Add live music, a fire pit and dance floor on a 2,500-square-foot deck overlooking a bucolic meadow and you’ve got all the ingredients for a good time.

Don’t put off the experience; however. This Saturday is the final cookout for this season. Live music starts at 7 p.m., with dinner at 7:30 p.m. Call Kamp Klamath at 482-0227. Reservations are a must.
