Around Del Norte: Annual Chamber dinner set

Who will win the annual awards for lifetime achievement and business leader of the year?

How about the Del Norte Pride award for improving the community’s aesthetics, or the Chamber volunteer of the year?

It’s not exactly the Oscars, but there is some suspense that will end Saturday night at the annual Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce Dinner and Awards Banquet.

This year it’s being held at the Tolowa Events Center in Smith River, with a no-host cocktail hour at 5 p.m. and dinner served at 6 p.m. For more information, contact the Chamber, 464-3174.

A chance to paint

For artists, Del Norte County offers a plethora of inspiration — enchanting redwood forest settings, stately sea stacks and crystal-clear rivers, just to name a few.

If you’ve ever thought about what it would be like to capture those scenes on canvas or paper, Crescent Harbor Gallery is about to embark on a new session of watercolor painting classes.

Beginning and intermediate classes will be starting Sunday, and will continue weekly, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 140 Marine Way in the harbor. The cost for each class is $15.

And if you become a member of the gallery, there are benefits of discounts on art supplies and workshops, not to mention the opportunity to exhibit your work – and perhaps make a sale! The annual membership fee is $40, or $45 for a family.

Call Erica by Saturday to register at (970) 560-6621 and get more information, or call the gallery at 464-9133.

New albums released

Coming up on Friday and Saturday, two local musicians will showcase their own artistic abilities.

The Gallery of Arts & Culture at 175 H St. will throw a CD release party for local musician Jon Parmentier. A social hour with refreshments starts at 5 p.m. and Jon will perform some selections from his new album, “Music for Redwoods,” at 6 p.m.

Watch for more details and an interview with Jon on the Coming Attractions page in Thursday’s Triplicate.

Questions? Call Barbara Burke at the gallery at 464-4745, or Jon at 218-1388.

Zack Freiwald, a native of Crescent City, will also celebrate the release of his latest album, “Get Over Myself,” Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Gordi Bros restaurant, 4301 Lake Earl Drive.

In addition to a performance, CDs will also be for sale for $12.

For more information, check out Zack’s website at www.zackfreiwaldmusic.com or call (541) 519-7845.

Kids and roller derby

Organizers are looking to form a league for junior roller derby enthusiasts.

Tsunami Siren derby member Adrianna Stefko, aka “Full Medal Jackie,” invites kids from 7 to 17 and parents to attend an informational session Thursday at 5:15 p.m. at the fairgrounds just to see what it’s all about.

And all are welcome to stick around afterward, as the Sirens will hold their regular practice session from 6 to 8 p.m.

Give Adrianna a call with questions at 954-7771.

Double the birthday fun

An open house is being held Saturday for birthday boys Warren and Dan Barnts, longtime proprietors of Del Norte Tire at 850 Northcrest Drive. Father and son turn 90 and 60, respectively, on exactly the same day.

Family members invite well-wishers to stop in at Del Norte Tire anytime from 2 to 4 p.m.
