Around Del Norte: Coming together for one of our own

Jerry Bachmann has undergone at least a half-dozen surgeries in the last couple of weeks.

“It’s a miracle he’s even alive,” said his sister-in-law, Andre Carpenter.

The Caltrans road crew worker was looking forward to showing off his classic SS Chevelle over Sea Cruise weekend when he lost control of his motorcycle Oct. 10 on U.S. Highway 199 and was thrown 30 feet. He’s currently paralyzed from the waist down at the Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland.

Back home, folks are mobilizing in support of the 48-year-old Crescent City resident. Some have driven up to be nearby in Portland, where his wife Tana is at his bedside.

“There’s hundreds of people reaching out to help,” said Andre, also of Crescent City. “I’m just amazed by it.”

Come Saturday night, even more people can show their support for Jerry. That’s when Billy Lund & Whiskey Weekend will perform a benefit concert from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the county fairgrounds Arts and Crafts Building.

Tickets for the 21-and-older event cost $10 and can be purchased at Sun Seekers, Del Norte Office Supply and 6 Degrees of Celebration.

For more information about the concert or other ways of helping Jerry, call Andre at 954-4930.

“There’s definitely a journey ahead,” Andre said, adding that doctors say that walking again is a long shot for Jerry.

But he’s not facing the journey alone. Not with his family behind him, and not with the sort of support a small town can muster in times of trial.

The owner of a local construction company has even offered to bring his crew over to the Bachmann residence to build a wheelchair-accessible ramp.

“Our community is amazing,” said Andre.
