Around Del Norte: Events focus on kids, arts, Italian dinner and TOPS

Every edition of the Triplicate includes a Community Calendar of upcoming local events.

And in many of our Thursday editions, we feature more in-depth information under the banner, “Coming Attractions.”

Plus, of course, every savvy event organizer knows that buying a newspaper ad is the ideal way to publicize an event with the exact wording and timing of the organizer’s choosing.

So excuse me if I seem to be jumping on the bandwagon here, but there are some things in the works that I just have to write about in this space as well. After all, savoring local events is one of the biggest responsibilities of a community newspaper. What follows is just a sampling of upcoming events (and don’t forget those tall ships are due in the harbor Friday!).

A day for the kids

You might as well get in the habit now of heading for the fairgrounds on Saturdays. The Crescent City Farmers Market will be starting up June 1. In addition, I wrote last week about the annual Ruby Van Deventer Wildflower Show scheduled for May 10-11. But well before that, this Saturday in fact, the fairgrounds will host the 13th annual Youth & Family Fair with Earth Day Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This one’s all about the kids. Activities will include free roller-skating, a petting zoo, face painting, art projects, a martial arts demonstration, games, healthy snacks and the Wonder Bus (a mobile library).

And it’s free, free, free! Plus, there’ll be an opportunity to register your kids for preschool.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Saturday’s event is sponsored by the Del Norte County Tobacco Use Prevention Program, the Solid Waste Management Authority, Recology and the county fair’s 41st District Agricultural Association.

For more information, contact the Family Resource Center at 464-5500 and speak to Cathy.

Art Walk and mural dedication

The next Crescent City Art Walk is Thursday night from 4 to 7 p.m., and its centerpiece event is a ribbon-cutting dedication of the ceramic murals that line 3rd Street downtown.

Local dignitaries and sponsors will be on hand, along with mural artist Harley Munger and some of the students who helped with the project.

Don’t miss the opportunity to check out those murals, plus a lot of new artwork on display at numerous venues downtown and in the harbor.

This Art Walk also happens to fall on the 159th birthday of the city of Crescent City. Another reason to celebrate the arts!

Another birthday

Also Thursday, members of the local chapter of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) will meet to celebrate that organization’s 50th birthday.

TOPS was started by a Milwaukee housewife who came up with the idea of mutual support sessions while sitting around the kitchen table with some friends and grumbling about the extra pounds they’d gained over the holiday season.

The local meeting takes place from 9 to 10 a.m. at 201 Del Norte St., with a weigh-in from 7 to 8:45 a.m. New members (men, women and teens) are always welcome, and every meeting features games, songs and discussion of weight-loss strategies. For more information, call Loretta, 464-4245.

Elks and ‘Italian Night’

The Crescent City Elks Lodge is gearing up for its “Italian Night” fundraising dinner Saturday at the lodge, 359 H St.

The menu includes steak, spaghetti, salad and dessert, and music will be provided by Three for the Road. Cocktails begin at 5 p.m., dinner at 6. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased at the lodge.

For more information, call 464-4448.
