More than 30 artists from all over the United States will show off their talent with brush, pencil, crayon or pen starting at the Coast Redwoods Art Association’s Ninth Annual Juried Art Show starting this week.
The art association will display 58 examples of two-dimensional art at the Crescent Harbor Gallery this weekend through Sept. 30. The art ranges from paintings and drawings to collage and mixed media.
The art show will kick off with a reception on Saturday, giving the community a chance to get to know the artists. Association vice president Hank Northrip said the artists range in age from “18 to 1,001.”
“We’ve got a few entries that are done with colored pencils and crayon. It’s what you can do with it,” he said. “I’ve got one that’s done with ballpoint pen, and it is outstanding.”
Northrip said many of the drawings on display were done on the spur of the moment.
“Some people draw right on the spot,” he said. “They’ll be sitting in their car and see something and dig out a pen. Next thing they know they’ve got themselves a drawing. That’s what happened in a couple of cases.”
As for judging, Northrip said he brings judges to Crescent City from out of the area. They’ll examine all the entries first and single out pieces that they believe aren’t worthy of the show. Northrip said the judges won’t consider those pieces at all, and they’ll be “juried out.”
But so far the artists entering the show have been lucky for the past four or five years, Northrip said.
“We haven’t had to jury any of them out,” he said. “Everybody’s turning in the best they’ve got.”
After a break, the judges will return and decide who should receive first, second or third places or an honorable mention. There will be four honorable mentions awarded at this year’s show.
There is also a people’s choice award, which Northrip said usually turns out to be a surprise.
“It’s not any of the big winners who win the people’s choice,” he said. “Somebody will find something that appeals to them and they’ll talk to some of their friends and they’ll all vote for the same one.”
The art show reception will be held 6–8 p.m. Saturday at the Crescent Harbor Gallery, 140 Marine Way at Crescent City Harbor. Awards for the art exhibit will be given out and refreshments will be served.
