With school about to start, the stores are having some pretty good pricing on school supplies.
Walmart is asking you to “Fill the Bus” with supplies for local students. Who knows how many we will have who need help obtaining what they need or if we will have some of the children who have come from afar?
So perhaps my now bringing up my pet project will seem like an added burden. A friend called me the other day to say she had again purchased boxes of crayons to add to our supplies as we begin collecting things for Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts.
What I’d like to ask you is to purchase a few things extra if you can while shopping, and tuck them away for later this fall when all the info on the program comes in. Or even to plan on doing a whole shoebox if you can.
Completed shoeboxes are typically picked up around Nov. 20, ending up in many different countries by Christmas. Boxes are filled with needed items as well as a toy and some candy, and when the kids receive their boxes, they also receive the news of God’s love in their own language.
Later this fall I will again list all the particulars, but you can start stocking up now, and it will surprise you what you can come up with by then.
We do have a few things going on that you might enjoy.
Today, the Smith River United Methodist Church will be holding its annual Summer Rummage and Bake Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church.
First and Beckstead will be the site of assorted treasures and wonderful baked goodies to tempt you. You can browse all kinds of interesting offerings, work up an appetite, and then find some yummy treats to satisfy it. For questions, call 954-7923.
Redwoods Family Worship Center is hosting a summer family barbecue following the 10:30 a.m. service tomorrow: “Do you need a change in life? A new direction and purpose for the future? Give Jesus a chance — see what Christ can do!” The folks at Redwoods invite you to experience a “powerful worship service and anointed word.”
There is nursery provided as well as a fun children’s church for the kids to enjoy.
After the service, enjoy the barbecue and watch the kids have lots of fun, weather permitting, with the inflatable super slide, jousting and more. It all happens at the corner of Parkway and English Lane.
Never been there? It’s a lovely church in a beautiful setting, and you can’t miss it!
Then on Friday, join us at New Life Community Church at 6 p.m. for game night. Bring your favorite game if you wish, though we have plenty — more are always welcome. Bring snack items to share, and settle in for an evening of fun and fellowship. You don’t have to be a member to be welcome, and as game nights go, “the more, the merrier!”
The church is at the corner of Second and D.
