Church Notebook: Whatever you need, a local church awaits |
Sometimes, that cold, wind-driven rain on a Sunday morning can make you want to dive back under the covers rather than to get up and get ready for church. And, even once ready, you look out the window and think “Do I really want to go out in that? “It’ll only be one day — nobody will miss me!” Maybe not — but, what will you miss? It’s been my experience that often on those nasty days when few show up for church or Bible Study, that turns out to be one of the best sermons or studies ever. Yes, maybe you think you won’t be missed, but you will — and you will miss out on a real blessing. Where to go to church, if you’re new, or have gotten out of the habit, is up to you. Crescent City has so many great churches. And not just churches. If you’re Jewish, there is Temple Beth Shalom. Christian churches abound, sometimes even more than one in a given denomination. Drive around town, and there they are, many of them occupying corners, visible and welcoming. If you’re Catholic, there is St. Joseph’s. Episcopal? St. Paul’s. Methodist? There’s one here and one in Smith River. Baptist? There’s Northside and First Baptist. Lutheran? Grace Lutheran. There are two Church of Christ congregations. Non-denominational? New Life Community. If you prefer a more charismatic/pentecostal atmosphere, there’s Redwoods Family Worship Center—and so many more. Just scan down this page to the directory for locations, service hours and types of services. A number of our churches hold both traditional and contemporary services, so whatever your choice, it’s most likely, rather literally, “just around the corner.” I have a few things at New Life Community coming up, and, hopefully, in the next weeks much more for other churches as well, with Valentine’s Day and Easter coming up. Easter is April 9 this year, so it will be here before we know it — even though it seems like Christmas was only yesterday. • And, speaking of Christmas — I have not learned exact locations yet, but the shoebox gifts we packed for Samaritan’s Purse went from this area to countries in Asia — China, Thailand and the Philippines to name a few. Hopefully, soon we’ll know more exactly their final destination. • The Ladies Auxiliary group of New Life Community Church will have a Revealing Party on Saturday, Feb. 4, after their monthly meeting. Final gifts will be exchanged, “Secret Sisters” will find out whether or not they guessed right throughout the year, and will draw names for new sisters for the coming year. Any lady attending the church is welcome to join the group. There will be a Bake Sale following church on Sunday, Feb. 5. The Movie Night for January that was postponed has been rescheduled for Feb. !7.
