Crescent City flying under the radar no longer

Makes Chronicle’s list of low-profile ‘California beach towns to visit now’

The San Francisco Chronicle is urging people to visit Crescent City’s “spectacularly lonely, untamed cliffs lashed by angry waves.” Now.

The paper included Crescent City in its “15 under-the-radar California beach towns to visit now” online slideshow and features a photo of Battery Point Lighthouse. Crescent City shares billing with Humboldt County’s Shelter Cove, Marin County’s Point Reyes Station and Los Angeles County’s San Pedro.

“California’s northernmost (and wettest) coastal town is hunkered on the curving bay that gave this commercial fishing port its name,” the description reads. “The spectacularly lonely, untamed cliffs lashed by angry waves is perfect for soulful walks on empty beaches, walking through tide pools to reach the old Battery Point Lighthouse and wandering through giant coast redwood forests, legendary host to Ewoks and the occasional Bigfoot.”

Jeff Parmer, executive director of the Crescent City-Del Norte County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, applauded the piece.

“I think it’s fantastic,” he said. “Anytime you get exposure in the Chronicle ... with such a large readership, it’s definitely a good thing.

This feature comes just a few weeks before media from across the state descend on Del Norte County for the Outdoor Writers Association of California’s 2014 fall conference Sept. 13-16.

Seventy-five association members, including magazine writers, bloggers, photographers, television and radio reporters will be housed at Lucky 7 Casino’s Howonquet Lodge. Local tourism representatives and businesses on both sides of the state line will take them fishing, hiking, kayaking and more.
