The Del Norte County 4-H column runs monthly. Today’s installment was submitted by Christine Jones and Valerie Machado.

It has been a busy summer for Del Norte County 4-H’ers.

Many of our local 4-H’ers have spent much of the summer getting their projects ready to show at the Del Norte County Fair. Most were busy matting photos and fine arts entries, baking scrumptious pies and cookies, putting the finishing touches on sewing projects or bathing, clipping and grooming their animals.

Local 4-H’ers showed animal and non-animal projects at our local fair. 4-H’ers spent hours, on their baking, preserved foods, photography, arts and crafts; and days or weeks on their clothing, textiles and home furnishing projects. Most of the animal projects are months-long, while others are year-round.

Many of the 4-H’ers’ animal projects were auctioned on the last day of fair.

A few of our local 4-H’ers even traveled south to compete at Redwood Acres Fair in Eureka and Humboldt County fair in Ferndale.

4-H’ers are busy finishing up their record books, which will be judged soon. A 4-H record book shows the accumulation of work over the year and includes things such as budget sheets, leadership forms, personal development records and a 4-H story about their year in the program.

Awards for their record books and achievements at our local fair will be presented at 4-H Achievement Night in September.

4-H Soup Supper and Country Auction

The 4-H Soup Supper and Country Auction is held annually, usually on the first Saturday in November. This year’s Soup Supper has been moved up to the first Saturday in October and will kick off National 4-H Week!

Various soups are donated by local restaurants and made by 4-H volunteers. This year we will have four varieties of soup, plus chili. Along with soup we also serve vegetables, bread and butter and a wide variety of desserts.

This year’s soup supper will be Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.  Soup will be served from 5 to 7 p.m.  The silent auction starts at 5 p.m. and the live auction at 6:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in donating an item for the silent or live auction, or interested in being a sponsor, can message us on our Facebook page or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

The sponsorship levels are Bronze, $50; Silver, $100; Gold, $250; and Platinum, $500.

Soup Supper tickets will be available from local 4-H members and at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds, Del Norte Office Supply and Parkway Feed.

We hope to see you there in support of our Del Norte County 4-H youth!
