Del Norte 4-H: Locals to attend Junior Livestock Expo |
Editor’s note: The Del Norte 4-H column appears every four weeks. To day’s column was written by Christine Jones and Valerie Machado. On Feb. 3 and 4, local 4-H members will be traveling south to Ukiah for Redwood Empire’s second Hands-On Junior Livestock Expo. So far members from four local 4-H clubs plan on attending. The expo is being put on by Mendocino County 4-H and FFA. Most participants will be attending an ethics workshop. Attendance at an ethics workshop is mandatory for all local youth who show market animals at the Del Norte County Fair. There will also be market animal workshops for beef, meat goats, sheep, swine, poultry and rabbits. The expo is also offering learning labs. Each participant can attend three different learning labs. Some of the labs will include: bio security, dairy cow, dairy goat, horse, tractor safety and maintenance, livestock judging and immunology. In addition to the workshops there will be a variety of vendors. This should be a fun learning experience for our members and leaders.
All about goats
Local 4-H clubs had the opportunity to learn all about goats from Brookings Veterinarian Dr. John Jacobson of Town and Country Animal Clinic. Organized by the Giddy Up ’N’ Goat and Wild River 4-H clubs, the field trip took place Jan. 14 and included a session on hoof care, nutrition, vaccines, and a demonstration on how to administer injections. Leaders and members alike learned valuable information on how to best breed, raise and care for their animals. Dr. John also answered questions about the health and care of rabbits. A very special thank you to Town and Country Animal Clinic and especially Dr. John for volunteering his time and expertise. Our local 4-H program thrives because of local people and businesses who donate their energy and knowledge to the benefit of our children.
