The Del Norte County 4-H column runs monthly. This installment was written by Christine Jones.
Two of our 4-H clubs, Giddy Up ‘N’ Goat and Wild River, recently participated in the Veteran’s Day Parade. 4-H clubs will also be participating in the upcoming Christmas Parade.
Wild River 4-H will be selling See’s Candy at the upcoming Holiday Fair at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds on Dec. 6. Look for us in the Arts & Crafts Building.
Pine Grove just completed a very successful fundraiser selling cookie dough and candles. It is also continuing its fundraiser for the Del Norte County Library with “Pennies for the Library.” Its goal is to raise $100 and it is currently at about $38.
Sunrise 4-H members will donate canned green beans to the community Thanksgiving Dinner and are encouraging their members to work at the dinner. They are encouraging their members to participate in holiday community service projects.
In fact, several of our local 4-H clubs will be helping wrap packages for Operation Santa.
Many clubs participate in community service projects during the winter months. Two of our Del Norte Community Clubs, Giddy Up ‘N’ Goat and Wild River are carrying on a Christmas tradition started years ago by leader Mary Hawkins.
The 4-H members collect recycling, and sometimes ask friends, family, and neighbors to donate theirs as well. Then, the clubs meet at the local recycling center and turn in the tin cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers.
In the past, the money was used to sponsor one or two families that may not have had a holiday dinner and gifts that year. Next, the 4-H’ers visit local businesses to select request mittens from the trees sponsored by Santa’s Workshop. The 4-H’ers have a wonderful time selecting gifts for kids in their age group, and do a great job telling the adult leaders if certain items are in style or not. Everyone has a terrific time, and the kids enjoy the gift of giving. Be on the look-out for 4-H youth as they give back to the community through numerous service projects.
