Del Norte birdwatchers go online

By Hilary Corrigan

A new Website seeks to catch the eyes of area bird watchers to document their observations, while a trail through Del Norte County offers more viewing spots and information on local airborne wildlife.

The California Redwoods Birding Trail details 43 spots along Del Norte County's extension of the Oregon Coast Birding Trail. That network encompasses 170 sites, described in maps and brochures.

A new brochure and Website — www.californiaredwoodsbirdingtrail.org — spotlights the local segment. Both give directions and descriptions of the birds that viewers can spot at such places as the mouth of Elk Creek, Point St. George, the Lake Earl Coastal Lagoon Boat Launch and Marshall Pond.

The Redwood Region Audubon Society has also launched a Website in an effort to document birdwatchers' observations in the region.

Earlier this month, society representative Pablo Herrera unveiled the national group's new Klamath-Siskiyou regional link — www.ebird.org/Klamath-Siskiyou. The site connects to the society's national Website database that tracks bird sightings through a partnership with Cornell University.

"A way to take that novelty of, ‘Oh, this is what I saw,' and turn it into science," Herrera said, noting the bird species checklists that birders maintain. "It makes your checklist so much more valuable."

The tool also aims to boost conservation efforts, as those who observe nature add to the data that can help gauge population counts and migration changes.

"It just takes casual birdwatching to a new level. It's what we call citizen science," Herrera said.
