Family reunion Del Norte-style |
Family descendants of Arthur A. Germain gathered in Hiouchi last week for seven days of Del Norte splendor. With sunshine and warm temperatures, 60 cousins ages 1 to 79 enjoyed their time together with kayaking, jet-boating, touring local attractions, picnics and more. Arthur Germain, after serving during World War I, discovered the area back in the 1920s, according to Germain’s niece, Carolyn Tweed of Crescent City. He hitchhiked from his parents’ home in Southern California to establish a successful gold claim at Craigs Creek along the Smith River and continued to reside in Del Norte County until his death in the 1970s. Family members reunite about every three years in Del Norte County from as far away as the Midwest to Hawaii. “We had a blast,” said Tweed. “Every day was better than the one before.” |
