Somerset intends to use the award to produce a book of photography of local natural beauty, with accompanying poetry, with the aim of helping to elevate Del Norte County youths.
Somerset is composing the poems to compliment photos taken by her father, Douglas Morgan.
According to Somerset, local youths often become dejected and disinterested, looking only at the disadvantages of living in a remote, rural area.
“In my peer group I’ve heard kids say, ‘There’s no mall.’ ‘It’s so boring.’ ‘Watching TV is the only thing to do.’ In reality, there’s a huge assortment of things to do.”
With this project she hopes to inspire kids to appreciate and take advantage of the matchless natural beauty around them.
Now entering eithth grade at the Crescent City site of the Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods, Somerset has previously been home-schooled and spent several years at the Crescent City Seventh Day Adventist Grade School.
She is the daughter of Douglas and Kathy Morgan of Crescent City.
The book, with a tentative title of “Out My Back Door,” is scheduled for publication at the end of this year.
