Ceramic tile murals grace downtown wall
A project to line a 100-foot concrete wall with ceramic tile murals is under way in downtown Crescent City. Del Norte Triplicate/Bryant Anderson When the Business Improvement District came calling, Harley and Jill Munger answered.
BID wanted a mural painted on a low, 100-foot-long concrete wall along Third Street downtown, and the Mungers came up with the idea of a series of ceramic tile murals.
They started two years ago, and with the help of various donors, they recently completed the 25th, with 25 more to go. Each mural features a unique Del Norte scene and title.
The market value of the work completed so far is estimated at $62,500, said Harley Munger, a Del Norte native.
Most of the work has been done by local youths, he said.
The Mungers, founders of Elk Valley Artisans, are seeking a Community
Development Block Grant through the city to pay for some of the
additional work.
“We’re always out there scratching for more” contributions, he said, adding that his wife is the chief fundraiser.
Here is a list of the donors so far, each of whom contributed enough for one of the first 25 murals:
