“Kids don’t float,” said Bev Noll of U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary 8-11. “Because kids don’t float, we have our annual life vest giveaway.”

Free life vests for infants and children 12 and younger will be handed out first-come, first-served starting at 10 a.m. Saturday near the small boat ramp next to Chart Room restaurant in the Crescent City Harbor.

Free safety checks for recreational boats will also be available. Boats that pass muster get a sticker to show law enforcement that the vessel has recently passed a safety test.

Members of the auxiliary will weigh, fit and measure kids to ensure a perfectly fitted life vest.

“Many times the parents want to oversize their child so they can grow into it,” Noll said. “But the life vests are not effective if they’re too big.”

Auxiliary member Jill Munger recently gave presentations to more than 600 students on the importance of using life vests and boat safety.

Funding for the free vests was collected by Friends of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Donations were given by Sunrise Rotary, Sutter Coast Hospital, Soroptomists and Elk Valley Rancheria.

The giveaway and safety checks celebrate National Safe Boating Week.
