Lighthouse tales: Column'saccidental vacation

Randy Ansley

I would like to apologize for missing the paper last week; I thought I had sent my column but it turns out that I had run it before. Fortunately the Triplicate staff was smart enough to not run it again. Newspapers are not like television where they get away with rebroadcasting the old shows forever. For all the faithful readers I promise to not let this happen again. If you don't read the column then I guess you didn't notice.

This week I would like to make an invitation to everyone to come to an open house at Battery Point Lighthouse on Oct. 24 between 3-6 p.m. We will have some light refreshments, free tours and a drawing for a Family Membership to the Historical Society. We have announced this before but we want to make sure everyone is invited. The tide should be way out that day and we are hoping for good weather.

We would also like to let you know that one of our kitties, Crystal, is going to the spa and should be at her most beautiful best. She is a little on the chubby side and it is hard for her to reach her back. We think she will enjoy the spa and we promise not to let her have any cute little hair ribbons.

Seagull antics

We went to Oregon for a few days and our RV volunteers Lee and Don Travis were nice enough to take care of the lighthouse for us. They reported that Jonathan the seagull is back to his old tricks. It seems that some little Starlings finished off his breakfast of dry cat food and he was still hungry. He saw Lee inside the lighthouse and started to drag his bowl up to the radio room window looking for more food. He is one smart bird but I think he is getting just a little pushy.

Winter months

Just a reminder, in a couple of weeks the lighthouse will return to winter hours. We will only be open on weekends when the tide permits. If you have a special group that wants to try to visit during the week please let us know; if we can schedule it we will do our best to make your group welcome. Remember that Battery Point Island is a County Park and you are welcome to visit the island anytime the tide permits between sunrise and sunset.

With the big car show a couple of weeks ago, the ever-popular Crab Races coming up during the next crab season and all the natural beauty the North Coast has to offer, Crescent City is a happening place. Invite your friends and family for a visit. We promise that their blood pressure will be lowered and they will not soon forget what we enjoy every day.
