Gary Reeves writing a series on Viet vet
Gary Reeves says his “Kingman 1971” series will eventually encompass six books. Del Norte Triplicate/Bryant Anderson Local resident Gary Reeves keeps plugging away on his series about a Vietnam veteran returning home from the war.
He has completed three books in his “Kingman 1971” series, the fourth is finished but not yet in print, he’s writing the fifth book and has a sixth one planned.
Reeves will be at Spirit 101 Books and Gifts on Saturday at 3 p.m. to sign copies of the three “Kingman” books in print. There will also be a reading of his books and gospel music by the Soul Revival Band with refreshments.
“It ought to be a lot of fun,” he said.
Reeves was encouraged to do a book signing by his friend Tom Pawloski
who runs Reach Out Ministries, a non-profit organization that operates a
food bank, thrift store and Spirit 101 Books and Gifts.
“Part of our ministry is to encourage people who have aspirations and
dreams that seem to be difficult, if not impossible, to attain,”
Pawloski said. “This is one way we can encourage Mr. Reeves to pursue
his dream of being an author.”
Reeves had originally planned to do four books in the series, but “it kind of got more involved than I intended,” Reeves said.
The story revolves around post-traumatic stress disorder and
recovering from PTSD. Reeves doesn’t just write about PTSD and how it
affects veterans, but also those suffering from spousal abuse or child
abuse.
He wanted to show that it affects more people than just veterans.
Reeves said he’s concerned that not enough is being done to help
people with PTSD and through his writings wants to raise awareness about
it.
The response from people who have read the “Kingman” books has been good, he said.
“People who have read it really like it,” Reeves said. “They’re always waiting for the next one to come out.”
