Navy medic visits local pen-pal pupils

Brent Smith, who recently returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq as a Navy medic, visited the Bess Maxwell 5th-grade class that supported him and his company during the nine-month tour of duty.

Joining the class were kin-dergarten students who helped with the project.

He was forward deployed with Lima Company, 4th Battalion, 5th Marines in Anbar Province.

The classes sent letters and care packages that Smith distributed to Marines in his company.

Smith showed students his equipment and military gear that totaled more than 80 pounds, and shared some insights with students about the Iraqi culture.

Smith, now assigned to Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corps Base. He is the son of Jim Smith of Crescent City.
