Orick Postmaster Kathy George is one of 36 people chosen from a field of 20,000 applicants to win the U.S. Postal Service's highest marketing honor: the Chief Marketing Officer's Growth Award.

George's "outstanding efforts" resulted in a 4,585 percent increase in revenue over the previous year, according to a Postal Service press release.

George will receive her award this week at a gathering of her fellow Northern Californ-ia postmasters. She found out she had won in February. She obtained the honor by holding multiple passport-selling events, but the successful technique was not her initial effort.

She first tried to key revenue to postage stamps about brides, and set up a booth at a local bridal fair. "No one was interested in buying stamps," she said. "They just wanted passports."

Credit her idea with the processing of an initial 67 passport applications, and a total of 221 sales or renewals by the time she finished. Most recently she was among five Northern California postmasters who pooled resources to put on a passport fair at a Eureka mall.

George has been a postal employee for 12 years, beginning as a part-time clerk and working her way up to postmaster.
